“Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:8-9

All Christians are subject to moral fatigue—tiring under the burden of doing what’s right. The culture does not always commend moral efforts, but on the contrary, it is often the decent people who are marginalized or made fun of because of their efforts to follow their faith. Even family can contribute to one’s weariness by not appreciating, but ignoring another loved one’s integrity. So, how do Christians remain faithful when their moral fortitude begins to fade?

Like a fatigued farmer who engages the elements and still sows seed in prepared soil, in spite of the harsh conditions—so committed Christians stay true to sowing to please the Spirit—regardless of rejection and the temptation to quit. Each follower of Jesus will enjoy heaven’s great harvest or will be embarrassed and judged for lack of a fruitful life. So we sow to please the Spirit—even when it seems unproductive—for here is faith’s test.

“But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold” (Job 23:10).

There is a recompense of reward reserved for those who persevere in righteousness. It may be in this life or the one to come, but we can be assured that Almighty God’s justice will prevail. If the Christian life was always easy everyone would want in, but the Lord in His infinite wisdom made the way of His will a faith journey that requires spiritual standards. The folly of the flesh leads to fatigue, but the Spirit’s insights leads to stamina.

Are you morally fatigued? Do you question if doing good deeds really matters? If so, ask yourself why you do what you do? If it is to please the flesh then you will live in chronic weariness, but if your motive is to please the Spirit you will find energy beyond yourself. A life well lived finds a way to remain faithful, especially when obedience doesn’t seem to matter. Christ’s followers who sow to please the Spirit are hopeful of a coming harvest.

Therefore, stay faithful as you sow to please the Spirit: sow seeds of forgiveness and receive a harvest of intimacy; sow seeds of acceptance and receive a harvest of friendship; sow seeds of prayer and receive a harvest of faith; sow seeds of generosity and receive a harvest of abundance; sow seeds of abstinence and receive a harvest of purity; and sow seeds of faithfulness and receive a harvest of eternal rewards. Spiritual sowing and reaping builds moral muscle. Strong are the saints who are faithful—while waiting on the harvest.

“I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow” (1 Corinthians 3:6).

Where am I morally tired and vulnerable? What good moral seeds can I sow to the Spirit?

“Know also that wisdom is like honey for you: If you find it, there is a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.” Proverbs 24:14

Hope from heaven is a dependable handle to hang on to through the ups and downs of life. Like a skilled mountain climber we hook our rope of trust to the face of the solid rock, so we have secure support. It does not mean we are absent of fear, but it does mean in the middle of our fears we can have faith in Holy God to handle the inclement conditions.

The wisdom of the Lord is not illusive, but available to all who humble their hearts and take the time to invite in His influence. Truth is sweet to the soul and it will nourish your heart like spiritual nectar. Belief is a worker bee on behalf of God that takes the pollen of providence and produces the sustenance of salvation. You may have tried religion and found it lacking, but do not give up on God—enter into a growing relationship with Jesus.

“The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown” (Matthew 19:22-23).

Hope keeps your heart fertile to grow the seed of God’s word. Perhaps past regrets have choked out your confidence in Christ, if so—determine not to give up—but to give Him another chance. You may be like Paul, Moses, Naomi, Hannah, Sarah and Abraham who saw the Lord use them much more in the second half of their life than the first half. As long as there is breath in your body, you have the potential to be a bold witness for God.

Jesus does not cut off those who trust Him, but leads them down the path of productive Kingdom living. Lift your eyes off yourself and look to Him and seek out how to serve those in need. Make sure you follow Him by faith—do not ask Him to follow you. Hope in the Lord adds fuel to your fire of faith. It is your soul’s internal combustion for the cause of Christ. Finish well by not giving up, but by giving all you have for God!

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing” (2 Timothy 4:7-8).

What is the Lord calling me to give over to Him and to not give up on Him?

There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God, and did not respect man. And there was a widow in that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, ‘Give me legal protection from my opponent.’ And for a while he was unwilling… Luke 18:2-4a (NASB)

The power of someone saying ‘no’ need not be discouraging, rather use it as a lesson in determination. ‘No’ is sometimes necessary to get our attention and give us the perspective we would have missed rushing through life. If everything were a ‘yes’ we could certainly take people and things for granted, and run the risk of our faith becoming flabby. It is when we exercise discipline, creativity and prayer that we encounter God.

For example, you may want to spend money right now, but your budget shouts back ‘no’, because money is tight. Instead of circumventing your circumstances with credit, become creative. Perhaps you can help someone steward one of their assets better by allowing you to use their beach or mountain home. Or, as a parent your ‘no’ to your child is for their protection. It is better for them to suffer a minor pain of disappointment now than significant life altering harm in the future. Furthermore, and most importantly, a ‘no’ is meant to move you toward knowing God. His ‘no’ is your heavenly attention getter.

This is Jesus’ point, He said one verse earlier, “Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up” (Luke 18:1). So negotiate God’s ‘no’ with persistent prayer. It is in prayer that you prevail and your character changes. Constant prayer over familiar issues like finances, relationships, work, health and family transforms your trust in God.

A ‘no’ is preparation so you can handle what God has in store for you in the future. Your boss may have said ‘no’, but you will gain skills and confidence in the interim as you persevere and innovate. Go back and pray about creative and cost effective ways to do an even more incredible job at half the cost. Your spouse may have said ‘no’, but don’t go behind their back and do it anyway. Honor them by standing down to the ‘check in their spirit’. At the very least you have expressed to them value and trust. Pray about how to proceed.

It is humbling to your heart, but it brings clarity to your head. It is inconvenient to your schedule, but it saves you time in the long run. There is some suffering for a season, but nothing compared to the hassle of grinding it out your own way without wisdom from above. So, stay in the fray of faith building. ‘No’ today is access to a better ‘yes’ tomorrow.

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (James 1:2-4).

What “no” have I received for which I need to be patient and wait on God’s timing?

“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” Matthew 24:36

No one knows when Jesus will return–we know He will, but we don’t know when. He came the first time as a suffering Servant to save the world of their sin and He will come a second time as the reigning King over all. He ascended from the world in a blaze of glory, while promising to descend one day in that same glory. Jesus’ estimated time of arrival is a divine secret reserved for the Lord God Almighty.

In fact, Jesus will return when we do not expect Him to return. The Almighty’s ambiguity about the second coming of Christ is meant to move us to faith and action. It is vain to speculate about something that we are incapable of knowing—instead this mystery is a test of our faithfulness until He comes, or until we go to be with Him. Predicting the date of Christ’s return distracts foolish prognosticators, whose pride misses the point.

“Command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer… Such things promote controversial speculations rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith” (1 Timothy 1:3b, 4b).

But there are benefits to a sense of urgency around the second coming of Christ. It keeps us from complacency and from getting caught up in the culture. The Lord does want us engaged in the eternal and not on the earthly—He wants to catch us being obedient, motivated by love for Him and people. Wise actions accompany a faith seeking soul.

The Almighty wants you occupied until He comes—occupied that is—on His agenda. As a Kingdom builder for Christ, pray each day how and where He wants your brick of belief to be placed for His glory. Fear will only frustrate you to flail about, or paralyze you in complacency. Instead, use your God-given talent and trust Him to achieve great things.

“He [Jesus] said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return. And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come” (Luke 19:12-13. KJV).

Replace retirement worries with reallocation of your time in service that leads to righteous outcomes. Steward your health, family, finances, faith, relationships, time, gifts and skills as a conscientious manager for your Master Jesus. You are the bride of Christ waiting patiently at the altar of love and obedience—this is no secret with your Savior.

“After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’ “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness” (Matthew 25:19-21).

How would the Lord have me occupy my time, as I prayerfully wait on His return?

“Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, ‘Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?’” Genesis 17:17

Sometimes God’s will is not logical or doesn’t even seem possible. Abraham certainly struggled with the idea of being a parent as a centenarian and of his wife conceiving at ninety years of age. It wasn’t possible; it didn’t make sense. Yet in reality all things are possible with God, and this was one of them.

The Lord made a promise that was out of the ordinary. He wanted to mark this occasion with an indelible stamp of being a “God thing.” Abraham tried to give God a way around this miraculous method by offering Him another plan. However, God was not interested in another plan. He was interested in setting the stage for a blessing that would validate His sovereignty and that would take the faith of Abraham, Sarah and an entire nation to a whole new level. God wants us and He wants us to take Him at His word.

Why is it hard to take God at His word? Why do we struggle with believing in something that is not logical or that takes us out of our comfort zone? One reason we struggle is because of our perception of God. We make Him so small. We bring Him down to our level rather than allowing Him to pull us up to His level! This is man-centered thinking; instead, let’s allow God to be God.

Faith allows us to travel places with God that we would never experience otherwise. Wouldn’t you rather be in the middle of a lake in a storm with Jesus, than on the calm shore around a warm fire without Him? This is where faith trumps logic. We trust Him when it doesn’t make sense; we follow Him when we are not sure of the destination.

We believe Him when others think we are strange, too religious or even fanatical. Let your Savior stretch your faith, and trust Him with the opportunity in front of you. Has your laughter turned to trust in God and awe of His accomplishments?

The Bible says, “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad” (John 8:46, NASB).

What impossibility am I facing that, with trust in God, becomes possible?

“The LORD said to Moses, ‘Send some men to explore the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites.…’ Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, ‘We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.’ But the men who had gone up with him said, ‘We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.’” Numbers 13:1a, 30-31

As we face life, we can be overwhelmed by its giant obstacles, or be inspired by its giant opportunities. Challenges and uncertainty tend to corrode our confidence. It is in the face of the unknown that we can move forward by faith, or backward in disbelief. What giant obstacles are you facing? How can your obstacles be converted into opportunities? Obstacles are stepping stones for obedient feet to follow.

Therefore, with aggressive patience, stay focused and you will eventually see some obstacles dissolve, and others transformed into treasures. Maybe a financial giant is looming large as an intimidating obstacle? If so, stay true to your integrity by not selectively suspending your core values for needed results. Instead, remain faithful to wise stewardship and honesty, and the right results will follow at the right time. Trust God to use scary giants for His glory.

God orchestrates giant opportunities for His greater good. He told Moses that He was giving His children the promise land; all they had to do was show up and receive His gift. Giant opportunities do require faith, planning, perseverance and hard work, as the reward of obedience and trust in the Lord is enough. So how are you facing the giants in your life; as obstacles or opportunities? Leaders look and pray for opportunities, and then explore them with energy and enthusiasm.

Your relentless leadership inspires your family, friends and work associates to remain faithful and to not freak out. Therefore, take the land of opportunity the Lord has given you. Difficult days and economic challenges are greater opportunities for God to get the glory. So be aggressive, increase your efforts, pound heaven in prayer and by faith receive what your Savior Jesus has already given you. Go after the giant opportunities with gusto and by God’s grace.

The Bible says, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13, NASB).

What giant obstacle do I have in which I can trust God to make an opportunity?

“…but the righteous will live by his faith…” Habakkuk 2:4b

Faith living is focused on Godly living. It is the road less traveled. Even for believers in Jesus Christ, faith living is not always predominant. But it really is the only way to live. Why settle for anything less? If you limit yourself to your efforts and your logic, then you only give God a token of faith. He is calling you beyond the honeymoon stage of faith to mature faith.

The Bible teaches, “Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil” (Hebrews 5:13-14). His desire is for you to come alive with a faith that is active and growing. A faith that only thinks of the past is anemic and stunted. A living faith is passionate about God’s vision for the future, and it is focused on the possibilities of today.

God’s creative genius inspires the follower of Christ. God’s ability to create relational opportunities is staggering. He is the network weaver par excellence. By faith, He can be trusted to lead you to just the right people. People whom you can serve and people who can join you in accomplishing God’s will. This is faith living. It is looking beyond the new relationship of today and sensing where God wants to take it tomorrow.

We need to determine ways to bring value to another person. It is not about what you can get from them, but it is all about how you can serve them. This is faith living. It is placing the needs of others before your own and trusting God to meet your needs. The Bible says, “This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God” (2 Corinthians 9:12). He releases you to serve others with His freedom in Christ. This is normal Christian faith living.

However, faith living is not irresponsible living. This is not some blind excursion that ignores the needs of your family. Prayer and godly advice guide it. Faith living is not lived in a vacuum, but lived in concert with those around you. Abraham went by faith to a new country (Genesis 12:4-5), but he exercised this transition while taking care of the needs of his family. Yes, faith, many times, requires sacrifice and service, but not in the guise of unwise decision-making.

Faith living trusts God’s timing and does not rush into battle unarmed and without a plan. You trust God to prepare you and provide the needed resources to carry out His will. You are no match for Satan without the weapons of spiritual warfare. Faith living recognizes our battle is not with “flesh and blood,” but that our battle is waged in the spiritual arena (Ephesians 6:12).

Therefore, do not see people as obstacles, but as part of God’s plan to teach you His ways and to grow you in your faith. Allow God and others to utilize your strengths and shore up your weaknesses. Be who God created you to be. Live by faith and not by sight. When you live by faith in God alone you are truly alive.

“… I [the angel of the Lord] have come here to oppose you because your path is a reckless one before me.” Numbers 22:32 b

The path you choose is the path you use. It may be a path of pride or a path of humility. The path may stimulate purity or impurity. It could be a path of wisdom or a path of foolishness. The path may be one of cooperation or a path of independence. Your path may be family friendly, or hostile to the health of your home.

Watch the path of success as it can easily veer down the path of lost accountability. The path you choose is the path you use. So, be very wise about the choices you make. Make sure the path you traverse follows through the woods of God’s will. Your path is a picture of overlaid choices. One after another, your daily decisions dig out a well beaten path. But do not be deceived, every path leads somewhere.

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it” (Matthew 7:13-14).

Your current path is not insignificant. If it is a path of preparation, then prepare well. A well prepared path paves the way for opportunity. This is the path of patient preparation. The more you prepare the wider this path becomes. The less you prepare the more narrow it becomes. The path of preparation may seem long and onerous at times, but be patient.

Your faithfulness now will bolster your influence later. The path of preparation requires persevering patience. Travel this path with focused attention. Enjoy the ride, for these may be the simplest days of your life. The path of preparation is the strong foundation of any excellent and eternally significant endeavor.

Another path to walk wisely upon is the path of personal intimacy with God. It is easy to overlook this path because of familiarity or busyness. But without a worn out path to God, you will wear out. It is a path that requires discipline, but the fruit of your faith’s exercise will serve you throughout life. When you walk the path of intimacy with God, He fills you with his peace, security and hope.

It is not a path of quick fixes, rather one of trust and endurance. Traveling a path without God is like walking in the country on a moonless night. Or, it is like running through a city during the day blindfolded. In either case there is a lot of activity, but it is filled with fear, confusion, misdirection and eventual hurt. Indeed, the path of God is not without pain or uncertainty. But as you travel on His path you are filled with His presence.

As you travel with God, be ever mindful of his guardrails of grace, love and law. They are there for your protection. They keep you from straying off His path of kingdom purpose. The worldly road most traveled is reckless compared to the less traveled path of heaven’s security. Choose daily the wise path of confession and consultation with your creator. The path of obedience to God leads to peace with God.

“Show me your ways, lord, teach me your paths” (Psalm 25:4).

Am I on the proper path to fulfill the Lord’s purposes for my life?

“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” Romans 10:9-10

There is a very important distinction between heart knowledge and head knowledge. A person can know facts about God in their head, without applying this it to their heart by faith. A man or woman can hear all the right things, say the right things, attend church and still be 18 inches away from heaven—the distance between the head and the heart.

We can play church, masquerade our true heart to others and even fool ourselves, but God cannot be fooled. We can volunteer in ministry, give money and have the accolades from genuine Christians, but has our heart truly been transformed by the grace of God? Evidence of conversion is a public declaration of Jesus as Lord and an internal confession that God raised Him from the dead. A heart engaged with eternity is saved from sin.

“The Lord says: “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught” (Isaiah 29:13).

Where are you on the continuum of your commitment to Christ? Are you still seeking? Have you crossed over the line of belief by bowing in humble submission to your Savior and Lord Jesus? Be honest with yourself and God if you have not given your heart to heaven. Pray for the Lord to help your unbelief and be bold to request prayer from others.

What life event will it take to lead you to authentic faith and repentance? Marriage? The birth of a child? The loss of a child? The loss of a parent? Health issues? Financial brokenness? When we are on our back, our heart looks to heaven for help. When we drop to our knees in humble prayer, we see the Lord lifted up and we invite His warm embrace.

Don’t fight the hang-ups in your head—instead surrender your heart to Jesus. The enemy will always find an excuse for your mind to reject the ability to have an eternal life in heaven. Do not dismiss childlike faith in Jesus for this is the entrance into His Kingdom. We are first born again with infant faith, and then we mature by grace and the truth of God’s word. Have you made this initial move of heart-felt faith? Take this first step of trust and start your walk with Jesus.

“But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation” (Psalm 13:5).

What obstacle to faith do I need to lay at the feet of Jesus and trust Him?

“When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” Luke 7:9

Great faith comes from believing in your great God. Awe accompanies the Almighty, for He is engaged in eternal matters. What matters to your Master should matter to you. Great faith in our heavenly Father is produced in a heart of humility, contentment, gratitude, and dependence. You see yourself as an ordinary person blessed by an extraordinary Savior. You have been rescued from the snares of sin and placed into the position of being a child of God. Your old life of self-focus contrasts with your new life of focus on others. You are free from fraternizing in trivial pursuits and are compelled to follow Christ’s commands. Great faith grows you more like Jesus.

Just as Jesus was under the authority of His heavenly Father (John 10:17), so you are under Christ’s authority. God’s Kingdom requires surrender and submission to His authority, not you asking God to bless your efforts after the fact. Prayerfully and humbly submit your plans to the cleansing power of the Holy Spirit. Once the Spirit has scrubbed your intentions clean, then you are free to move forward. When you remain under His authority you are able to hear His commands clearly. Great faith acts on what it hears from the Lord, for instant obedience is evidence of great faith.

Great faith is not afraid to obey Jesus. Obedience may seem overwhelming at the time, but when God says so, it is done. So you are wise to instantly obey what He says. Do not hesitate when you hear from heaven. He has His reasons for wanting obedience from you now. For one thing, He knows you might forget if you fail to obey now. He knows your fragile memory can forget Him. When you instantly obey, you don’t run the risk of forgetting your heavenly Father’s instructions. Instant obedience feeds great faith in God.

Moreover, our great faith grows others. Your children see your great faith and are challenged to do the same. It serves them well when you are not around. Your friends and acquaintances see your great faith and they have hope. Your unbelieving relatives see your great faith and come to believe there has to be a God behind such bold belief.

Above all else, your heavenly Father sees your great faith and sees someone He can trust. He can trust you with His blessing, His healing, His wisdom, and His resources. Great faith is trustworthy because it is grounded in God. It is not blind and irresponsible; rather it believes the unseen and stewards it well. Great faith is found among the ordinary. It is engagement in everyday life that invites great faith.

Your role as a regular Christian makes you a compelling candidate for great faith. Most importantly, great faith promotes God’s greatness.
