“I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.” Matthew 10:16

It is a temptation for followers of Jesus Christ to drift into naïve living. There can be disengagement with life that becomes irresponsible, but Jesus said, “My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one” (John 17:15). It is engagement in the world that gives Christians relational equity with unbelievers. We are called to trust others, but to simultaneously verify their words and actions.

Parents do this with their children when they confirm that their homework assignments are complete. Adolescents have to be reminded to take their backpacks to their bedrooms, and warned not to snack before dinner. Loving moms and dads keep an eye out for their child (sometimes in the back of their heads it seems), as they have one trusting eye of encouragement, and one somewhat skeptical eye of accountability.

“And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God” (Philippians 1:9-11).

The same can be said about your work. If you think everything is ok all the time, you will one day abruptly discover it is not. Wise managers, leaders and associates hunt down bad news and cage it with critical collaboration and solutions. They seek to understand its source and not repeat the same mistake twice. Negative trends can be your friend if they are diagnosed early and dealt with thoroughly. There is a practical paranoia when filtered through prayer that is productive, necessary and responsible.

Furthermore, reward the candor of concerned team members. When they speak up and seem somewhat cynical, their passionate prognosis means they care. Be wise and daily discern the meaning of important data like sales reports and your child’s mid-term report card. Prayerfully and thoughtfully interpret the information, make adjustments by faith, and then carry on in confidence knowing you have done your part. Servants of Jesus are shrewd to discern the times and wise to prayerfully adjust accordingly.

“A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it” (Proverbs 22:3).

What opportunity or person am I facing that requires extra discernment and prayer?

“So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him… “Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison.” Acts 12:5, 17a

Prayer is a timesaver. It saves followers of Jesus from unnecessary seasons of anxious worry. It saves an employer from a wrong hire and the valuable investment of time, money and training in someone who does not stay around for very long. It saves a dating couple from a naïve emotional engagement to marriage without counting the cost of a lifetime commitment to love, to respect and to serve each other. Prayer waits for God’s best.

The flesh forces issues when prayer is void in the relational process. A person who is self-motivated, but not Spirit led exerts a lot of energy, but can waste a lot of time. A prayerless approach to life and work can easily end up in a focus on the urgent to the neglect of what really matters. Prayer protects you from the clenches of another’s crisis.

“I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to protect us from enemies on the road, because we had told the king, “The gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to him, but his great anger is against all who forsake him.” So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer” (Ezra 8:22-23).

Is prayer the primary focus in your decision making process? Do you rest in the realization that He can be trusted to reveal the way you should go? Do you realize that His truth—though at times counterintuitive—saves you time in the long run? What the Lord is saying may not make sense now, but later as you look back it becomes clearer.

It is not a copout to first pray before you commit—indeed it is a wise filter for decision-making. Our Lord Jesus smiles when His children take the time to save time, by waiting on His understanding in prayer. The prayerless crazy cycle of overreacting in fear and anger only prolongs the pain, while patient prayer applies heaven’s healing process.

So the Lord’s wisdom reminds us: Are you considering a career transition? Then ask God, what role in my work can I bring you the most glory? Are you facing a difficult financial decision? Then ask Christ, how should I manage Your resources as a wise steward? Are you estranged from a friend or relative? Pray, what can I do to love them in Jesus’ name? Time is a gift from God that requires prayerful use and not fleshly abuse. So, pray well.

“While I was still in prayer, Gabriel, the man I had seen in the earlier vision, came to me in swift flight about the time of the evening sacrifice. He instructed me and said to me, “Daniel, I have now come to give you insight and understanding” (Daniel 9:21-22).

How can I create a culture of prayer in my life, my family and my work?

“Epaphras, who is one of you and a servant of Christ Jesus, sends greetings. He is always wrestling in prayer for you, that you may stand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured. I vouch for him that he is working hard for you and for those at Laodicea and Hierapolis.” Colossians 4:12-13

Prayer is not a passive undertaking—rather it is an energized exercise of faith. Status quo believers only tip God with prayer, but eager followers of Jesus are compelled by an intense commitment to pray. Spiritual sweat flows from the pores of a soul earnestly engaged with eternity. There is a desperate dependency that devoted Christians display.

Adversity has a way of bringing us to our knees in utter reliance on our Lord. Prodigal children bring parents together in prayer. Death convenes communities and families in prayer. Misunderstandings, mistreatment and misguided motives move hearts to pray. These aggressive prayers respond to rough circumstances with a need for holy help. But there is another type of laborious prayer that petitions Christ on behalf of others.

“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should” (Colossians 4:2-4).

Serious students of prayer know how to intercede on behalf of their brothers and sisters in the faith. They pray boldly for their friends and family to stand firm in the will of God—not wavering in face of the world’s trials and temptations. Plead for those whose body writhes in pain—go before God and pray for His healing. Maybe on Monday you pray for missionary friends, and Tuesday pray for truth to transform your child’s thinking.

Perhaps on Wednesday you gather your family together in prayer for our nation and leaders to follow the Lord’s principles as defined in the Bible. On Thursday consider praying for those outside the faith: friends and neighbors who need to know Jesus. Friday can be prayers for your church, a ministry and their need for encouragement and financial support—offer Saturday prayers for the poor and needy, and on Sunday pray for those who gather in worship to be ignited by the Holy Spirit to live by grace through faith.

Devote yourself to aggressive and grateful prayers—and all the while anticipate what Almighty God wants to do in and through your life. Remain steadfast in your allegiance to heaven, without worrying about what you can’t control. Earnestly pray for others and you will experience the joy of unselfish service and the exhilaration of Christ’s replies.

“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops” (James 5:16b-17).

How can I increase the intensity of my prayers in a faith focused for others and their needs?

“Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.” Psalm 143:8

Are you confused about what God has next for you in your life, work and relationships? Do you feel trapped in your aloneness—unsure if anyone really cares or not? It is in these moments of doubt and uncertainty that Jesus deeply desires to have communion with you and care for your soul. A lack of clarity is a calling card for Christ to show up and show you the way.

The human mind needs help to understand the ways of God. Without the Holy Spirit’s illumination we default to untruthful thinking and wrong assumptions that lead to confusing conclusions. For example, someone may not feel loved—and it is in the absence of love that fear and distrust set up shop. One who struggles to think they don’t deserve to be loved is wise to bow in prayer and receive their heavenly Father’s loving embrace.

“Show me the wonders of your great love, you who save by your right hand those who take refuge in you from their foes” (Psalm 17:7).

Sometimes there is a lack of clarity of what to do at work. Everyone is eager to work hard; they just want to make sure they are occupied on the right things. How unfulfilling to sweat long and hard, only to discover your diligent service was around an unnecessary project. Perhaps in these awkward moments the leader and team swallow all pretenses and pray. Seek the Lord’s face first—then face with confidence whatever challenges arise.

Prayer is not a punch card that gives us credit in heaven, or a last resort when everything else has gone wrong. Prayer is first, last and along the way—the process of aligning with Almighty God’s agenda. He already has the plan laid out for His children. Our part is to patiently wait and listen for Christ’s clarity—as He is not the author of confusion.

“For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints” (1 Corinthians 14:33, NKJV).

Where is the Lord calling me to prayer, so that He can bring clarity and peace?

“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.” Proverbs 19:21

Prayer taps into the purpose of God. The human heart can conceive and birth ideas, but what is the Lord’s best direction to follow? This is the beauty of being led by the Spirit and not driven by the flesh. It is in commune with Christ that Christians can be clear on next steps in their service for God. Indeed, prayer is preeminent in the planning process.

Prayer positions an individual and a group before God in utter dependence on Him for how to understand and carry out His plan. It’s when we rush ahead in bold, but blind determination that we miss out on engaging an eternal agenda in the process. Yes, the Lord can and does work through our immature maneuvers, but why not wait on Him in prayer and save ourselves time, money and emotional angst in the process?

“He gave him the plans of all that the Spirit had put in his mind for the courts of the temple of the LORD” (1 Chronicles 28:12a).

What are you facing that requires prayerful planning? Job relocation? Financial solvency? Marriage communication? A healthy family? Physical and emotional stamina? Spiritual growth? Ministry clarity? Relational growth? Church service? Time for rest? Be intentional to get ahead of the planning process with prayer and watch God’s peace reign.

How do you begin to enter into a prayerful planning process? Start by asking the Lord to purify your motives: praise Him and avoid the praise of people—seek alignment of your will with His will—all for His glory and not for your hidden agenda. A prayerful planning process is powerful, because it produces results way beyond your capacity. Prayerful planning invites the Lord to lift the agenda into His arena of blessing and favor.

So, slow down so you can speed up later—confident of a plan consecrated to Christ. Stay diligent in a process of prayer and discernment along the way: what’s good from what’s best. Ask Jesus to renew your mind, so your thinking is based on Almighty God’s abundance and not societies scarcity mentality. Prayer is planning that produces eternal outcomes.

“All this,” David said, “I have in writing as a result of the LORD’s hand on me, and he enabled me to understand all the details of the plan” (1 Chronicles 28:19).

What problem or opportunity do I face that requires a persistent, prayerful process of planning?

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:43-45a

Mature prayers are no respecter of persons; they even seek out praying for those who don’t—according to human standards—deserve prayer. But the Lord’s terms for righteous prayers have no bias for those who have been acting badly. The flesh does not default to prayer for those who bring them harm, but the Spirit does. Radical prayers include enemies.

Anybody can pray easy prayers, however, hard prayers change the person who perseveres in offering difficult prayers. What we pray about is what we care about. Whom we pray for is whom we feel for. It is many times a severe struggle to pray for someone who inflicts emotional, relational and physical pain, but this is the Lord’s path to grow us. Those outside of Christ do not have a context for character, but those who know better do.

“Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34a).

Radical prayer roots out bitterness and replaces it with blessings. This cannot be accomplished in our own strength, but only by the grace of God that governs a grateful heart. Our posture of love and prayer for those who stand against us is a picture of our Savior’s sufferings. Jesus did not get back at His enemies—He gave His life for them.

Who has treated you with disrespect, even contempt? Has another’s jealousy led to hatred for you and what you stand for? As a follower of Jesus you are not called to get even, but to engage your offender in radical prayer. It is in this upright contemplative context that compassion is created and extended. Your heart becomes flush with forgiveness. So, by faith, move from mediocre petitions to radical prayer and love: applying both to your enemies as well as your friends. Your Christ like example attracts others who want to become children of God.

“Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.” But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:13-15).

Who in my life causes me pain and needs my radical prayers and love?

“Pray that the LORD your God will tell us where we should go and what we should do.” Jeremiah 42:3

There is wisdom in praying about “that”, whatever “that” may mean. It may mean waiting on marriage because one parent has yet to bless the engagement. “That” could represent a check in your spirit over a business deal or an additional financial obligation. Praying about “that” is the Lord’s way to protect, preserve and provide for His children.

What are you currently facing that needs your prayerful attention? Perhaps it’s a career transition—pray about that, considering changing churches—pray about that, tempted to quit school—pray about that, or weighing an opportunity to volunteer—pray about that. Prayerfully ask, “What does the Lord want for my life and what’s best for His kingdom?”

“Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:12-13).

It’s in the discipline of waiting that we discern the best course of action. Consider cloistering yourself with Christ for twenty-four hours, just to listen and learn. It is rare that prayer is a waste of time—indeed it saves time. When you pray about “that”, you allow the Holy Spirit to tap on the breaks of your busy life. Slow down and listen to Him.

Prayer positions you to be productive in the ways of God. Abraham’s senior servant experienced this, “Then he prayed, “LORD, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today, and show kindness to my master Abraham” (Genesis 24:12).

When you, your family, your church, your company or your ministry prays about “that”, you receive from the Lord liability insurance for your life. Where He leads, He commits to provide. Where He reroutes, He creates the necessary resources. Where He shuts doors, He opens another with greater Kingdom possibilities. So, pray about that knot in your stomach and watch Him free you in effective service for your Savior Jesus.

“Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man” (Nehemiah 1:11).

What am I facing that needs my patient prayers? Who can I engage to pray with me?

Effective radical prayer engages the hearts of men and women, teenagers and young adults, boys and girls. Solo prayer invites the ear of the Lord, but group prayer purifies prayer. In a group of devoted disciples God’s will is established and boldly petitioned to heaven. Prayer support from a small group gives confidence, direction and determination.

For example—the righteous—fervent prayer for those outside the faith is an effective way to draw them to within the faith. There is no doubt hell shutters when heavenly supplications seek to snatch lost souls from eternal damnation. The Holy Spirit hovers over prayer meetings motivated to glorify the Lord and save sinners. Group prayer ignites eternity.

“After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly” (Acts 4:32).

We pray and praise God, but Christ converts. The pressure is not on Christians to make Christians, but to pray for hearts to be pricked by God’s Spirit, converted and born into the Kingdom of God. The Lord uses prayer to soften sinners, so the soil of their heart moistens and seeds of truth take root. Pray without ceasing for Jesus to save lost souls.

“Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved” (Acts 2:46-47).

The local church is a natural location to lean into the Lord in small group prayer. Also, our homes can be a sanctuary of supplication to Christ, with other liked minded believers. So it begs a question, “Are you engaged in effective prayer with other followers of Jesus?” Prayer is a team sport, it’s not meant for us to only linger alone with the Lord.

We all need prayer and we need to pray for others. It is a Holy Spirit initiated prayer movement that moves cultures and communities toward God. Perhaps we complain less to each other and pray more with each other. When we humble ourselves together before God, He hears, He answers and He heals. Effective prayers mobilize the Body of Christ.

“You will have complete and free access to God’s kingdom, keys to open any and every door: no more barriers between heaven and earth, earth and heaven. A yes on earth is yes in heaven. A no on earth is no in heaven” (Matthew 16:19, The Message).

Does Christ capture my heart in radical prayer with a small group of believers in Jesus?

“The LORD said to me, “Son of man, these are the men who are plotting evil and giving wicked advice in this city.” Ezekiel 11:2

The sun never sets on evil, and alarmingly, there are people as intent on evil actions as there are those committed to good ones. Like roaches under the cloak of darkness, hideous human hearts are secretly hatching evil schemes. The worst kind of evil is disguised in the robe of religion.

They blame their terrorist tirades on a god of their making. They worship an idol of violence at the altar of racism, anger, unforgiveness, and hatred. There is no reasoning with religiously driven people warped in their warring ways. The realities of our world are riddled with religiously motivated people bent on evil. These religious fanatics are, of course, deceived and delusional.

Satan is smiling at these acts of atrocity aimed at innocent people. What better strategy for hell than for people to murder in the name of religion? This plan sends people to hell for eternity and causes others to experience hell on earth. It is a hellish nightmare that is plaguing more and more of the modern world. It is the antithesis of true religion.

Unfortunately, engineers of evil are engaged everyday in the execution of evil acts. They spend time, money, and energy like an aggressive investor in a business project of monumental proportions. Their return on investment is measured by the evil outcomes of fear, intimidation, violence, mayhem, and murder. However, there is an unseen battle raging that is even more decisive. It is the battle for the souls of men and women.

A person who comes to Christ in confession and repentance does not condemn others who hold different beliefs. Condemnation is for cowards, not for Christ followers. There is no condemnation in Christ Jesus (Romans 8). An individual “in Christ” has new weapons in their arsenal of faith. Hate has been replaced by love. Violence has been replaced by peace. Death has been replaced by life. Retaliation has been replaced by forgiveness. Prayer is the primary weapon in spiritual warfare.

A tsunami of prayer will penetrate the pride of those stuck in the sick and seductive talons of terrorism. Heaven’s call is for followers of Jesus Christ to rise up in a powerful proclamation of prayer. We are the Body of Christ. When one member of the body suffers, the entire body suffers. Faith is not isolated; it is committed to the community of faith. Our friends in the faith who suffer under the tyranny of terrorism need our unprecedented prayer support.

Fervent prayer flies in the face of fascism disguised in a fanatical but false faith. We can act as if we are isolated from international crises, but we are not. We will be effected as long as evildoers plot evil. Until evil is totally transformed by the grace of God, we have a giant opportunity to invest in eternity. We have the remedy for radical religious jihads driven by evil intent: faith in Christ. Humbly and persistently we can present Jesus in our behavior and in our beliefs. He is the answer for atrocities hatched in hell. Heaven trumps hell when trust in Christ is preeminent. Pray every day for trust in Christ to triumph over tactics of terrorism. Evil plotters are no matches for persistent and pure prayers. Pray for His Kingdom to come, on earth as it is in heaven.

The Bible says, “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy… having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them” (2 Timothy 3:1-2, 5).

“And the Lord accepted Job’s prayer. After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord made him prosperous again and gave him twice as much as he had before.” Job 42:9 b, 10

Friends snared by sin need our prayers not our prognosis. God’s part is conviction and life change, while our part is prayer. That is not to say there isn’t a time and place to confront a believer in disobedience. However we are not the judge—God is. Other centered praying is freeing for both the person praying and for the person being prayed for. As we pray for others we are freed from preoccupation with our own problems.

Indeed, the severity of another’s needs tend to dwarf our own. It is through the posture of praying for another that our perspective becomes healthier. Our gratitude grows through selfless prayer. We learn to count our many blessings and to be content. Of course it is ok to ask for God’s favor on our life, but not at the expense of excluding our prayer for others.

“Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant” (Genesis 25:21).

Authentic Christianity results in love for people. Is prayer a meaningful way to love? Of course, and the greatest test may be to pray for those who do not pray for you. This is truly unselfish praying. Your only reward may be a clear conscience before God. Pray for your adversaries and trust the Lord to accomplish His purpose in their life, in His time. Jesus said, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44).

An exciting part of praying for others is the change you experience. Praying for other people cultivates an attitude of love and forgiveness in the person praying that no human counselor can provide. Godly counsel can guide you there, but only God can produce transformation of the heart. Prayer places you face to face with your Heavenly Father.

Talk with God often about the needs of others, but be careful in that you may become an answer to your own prayer. Pray for a friend in financial need and the Lord may lead you to assist. Pray for a relative whose heart is hard and God may lead you to soften them with kindness. Pray for a child who has lost a parent and you may become their parent. Pray for the leadership needs at the church and by faith you may step into that leadership role. Be keenly aware of what you pray, as you may become the answer to your own prayer.

Most importantly, pray for those outside of the faith in Christ. You can pray this boldly knowing it is God’s will. Pray God will use you, circumstances, and other believers, to draw another to Him. A stubborn heart is no match for prayer. Satan’s deception is no match for prayer. Prayer can travel behind enemy lines and accomplish more in a moment than a lifetime of worry and work. Pray for sinners to be saved and glorify God.

“Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved” (Romans 10:1).

How can I regularly pray for family, friends and foes for their needs to be met in Christ?
