“Men are God’s image bearers.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – June 19, 2022
So God created mankind in his own image; he created him in the image of God; he created them male and female. Genesis 1:26-27
My husband and I recently talked about Father’s Day. “I used to always dread Father’s Day at church,” he said. “On Mother’s Day, women are celebrated and praised. But when Father’s Day rolls around, it’s a different story. The sermon always seems to be about how men are falling short: they should lead better, serve more, and be better men. I’ve never felt encouraged at church on Father’s Day.”
Although I am certain this isn’t true in every congregation on Father’s Day, when I heard this, I felt sad for my husband and for other men who may feel the same. So, to do my little bit to celebrate men today, I’d like to share five reasons to admire and appreciate men.
First, men are generally more logical than women. I can be spinning emotionally in a problem and if I ask my husband to help me sort it out, he can often logically—and easily—see right through my trouble to the answer. How many times have I been grateful to him that he has given me clear understanding on a confusing issue?
Next, men are created to protect and provide. At their cores (even though culture and gender roles have changed) men still have the desire to protect the women and family they love, and to provide for them too. Research by Christian author Shaunti Feldhahn shows that even if a woman earns more money than her husband, that a man will still feel the responsibility to provide. Pretty amazing, right?
Men are emotional. It may not seem like it at times, but God created men with feelings just as women have feelings. I’ve known my husband to shed a few tears during a touching movie or upon the birth of a new grandchild. Men often feel just as deeply as women, even if they don’t express their emotions in the same way. I appreciate this about men—and it’s something good for women to keep in mind as they relate to them.
Men can fix things. Okay, at the risk of stereotyping, I acknowledge that not every man is Mr. Fix It. But many men are inclined to repair and build things. This makes me want to do a happy dance. My husband is the reason our home is equipped with dimmer switches on our lights, a beautiful place in my pantry to store my spices, and sparkling lights on our back deck to enjoy on fresh summer nights.
Men will greatly sacrifice and take risks to care for their families. Good men know what it’s like to go the extra mile to move to take a new job so they can care for their families. They will work extra hours to care for their families. They will do for those they love to care for those they love.
These are just a few of the things I appreciate about men. They are fearfully and wonderfully made. They are made in God’s image, and they are worthy of praise this Father’s Day.
“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing” (1 Thessalonians 5:11).
Prayer
Lord, thank you for the good men you have placed in my life. Help me to see them as your image bearers. Amen.
