“Friends are called to emulate the forgiveness extended by God.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – February 12, 2024
A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity. Proverbs 17:17
Friendship is rich with wisdom and guidance, emphasizing the significance of genuine love and companionship. The essence of friendship lies in selfless love, loyalty, and mutual support. This verse highlights the enduring nature of true friendship, rooted in love that transcends circumstances. The foundation of friendship is laid in the commandment to love one another. In John 15:12, Jesus instructs his disciples, saying, “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” This divine love serves as a model for how friends should relate to one another. The sacrificial and unconditional love demonstrated by Jesus becomes a standard for friends to follow, encouraging a selfless and giving attitude in their relationships.
Friendship is not solely based on shared interests or convenience but is deeply rooted in mutual edification and spiritual growth. Proverbs 27:17 expresses this idea: “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” True friends are meant to uplift and strengthen each other, contributing to each other’s personal and spiritual development. This concept emphasizes the transformative power of genuine friendship. Moreover, biblical friendship calls for loyalty and trust. Proverbs 18:24 declares, “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” This verse underscores the value of a steadfast and reliable friend. Loyalty, akin to the bond between siblings, is a crucial aspect of biblical friendship, emphasizing the commitment to stand by each other in times of joy and adversity.
Forgiveness is another vital element in a generous friendship. Ephesians 4:32 encourages believers to “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Friends are called to emulate the forgiveness extended by God, fostering an environment of grace and understanding. This approach promotes harmony and reconciliation within friendships. Humility is another relational lubricant for friendships. Philippians 2:3 advises, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility, value others above yourselves.” Friends are encouraged to prioritize each other’s well-being and interests, fostering an atmosphere of humility and selflessness. This approach builds strong and enduring friendships that withstand the tests of time. Humility expresses patient love.
Friendship revolves around love, loyalty, mutual support, forgiveness, and humility. Friends are called to embody the selfless love demonstrated by Jesus, standing by each other in both joyous and challenging times. The wisdom found in Scripture provides a timeless guide for cultivating meaningful and enduring friendships rooted in the principles of divine love and grace.
Henri Nouwen describes how friendships rooted in God, draw us closer to God, “Dare to love and be a real friend. The love you give and receive is a reality that will lead you closer and closer to God as well as to those whom God has given you to love.”
