A Servant Heart and Spirit

Written by Pat Elsberry

Be a fountain, not a drain. Let’s serve others by being a fountain of God’s love, mercy, and grace, and in doing so, inspire and uplift those around us.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – October 6, 2024

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 1 Peter 4:10

My family and I recently saw the movie The Forge. The film follows the life of a young man, a recent high school graduate with no plans or direction for his future. His single mom challenges him to begin charting a better course for his life when he meets a successful businessman who takes him under his wing and begins to mentor him. If you have yet to see The Forge, I encourage you to do so. It’s also a great movie for your children as it teaches valuable life lessons and has a positive message about the importance of mentorship and personal growth.

Over the years I worked at Chick-fil-A, I learned a lot about having a servant heart and spirit. We can serve others in many ways – time, finances, praying, or sharing God’s gifts are just a few ways to have a servant spirit. During those years, I witnessed many instances of those with a servant heart, but one friend consistently walked the walk. Even though his schedule was jam-packed each and every day, he made it a priority to pour into others. He was a mentor to many young men – he would pour into those who were just beginning their careers, some who were newly engaged or married, and many who were of high school and college age and needed guidance. This always touched me because I knew little white space was on his schedule, but serving and mentoring others was a priority for him. If it meant he had to get up early and meet someone for a 7:00a.m. breakfast or a Saturday morning coffee, that’s what he did. He was a reflection of our Heavenly Father here on earth to many, and he will probably never truly know the positive impact he made on the lives of others until he gets to heaven.

Jesus, the ultimate role model of servanthood, described Himself as a servant when He said, “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.” (Mark 10:45). His life was a living example of servanthood, from dwelling among us as a man to washing the feet of his disciples. Each day, we strive to emulate Jesus and cultivate a servant’s heart and spirit within us. The Forge beautifully encapsulates this spirit with the line, “Be a fountain, not a drain.” Let’s serve others by being a fountain of God’s love, mercy, and grace, and in doing so, inspire and uplift those around us.

“Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves” (Romans 12:10).

Prayer

Father God, thank you for all you have done in my life. Just as you have blessed me, may I be a fountain of love, hope and encouragement to those around me, serving others just as you did when you walked this earth.
