Are You a Follower or a Fan?

Written by Pat Elsberry

The joy and peace that comes from being a follower of Jesus far surpasses the excitement of being a fan.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – October 27, 2024

Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” Luke 9:23

At a women’s conference, I had the privilege of hearing Priscilla Shirer, the main speaker. Her words have a transformative power that can’t be overstated. If you’ve never experienced her in person, I urge you to seize the opportunity the next time she’s in your city. A day spent soaking in her wisdom can truly change you for the better. She posed a question that resonated deeply – Are you a follower or a fan of Jesus? Let’s delve into the profound difference between the two.

A fan means you are an enthusiastic admirer or devotee of a person. Being a fan can mean that you like, respect, and even admire him. Typically, we associate being a fan with a sport, a team, or a celebrity figure. In the case of being a Jesus fan, you are a fan of what he can do for you. For instance, it’s because you believe he can heal you or increase your finances.

On the other hand, a follower of Jesus is not just an admirer, but someone who has made a personal commitment to him. They dedicate their entire life to him, ready to follow him and his teachings wherever they may lead. By making Jesus the top priority in their life, a follower engages with his word, internalizing his instructions within the love letter he left for us. They connect with him through prayer and worship, striving to emulate his character and love others as Christ loved us.

When Jesus was brought before King Herod, the scripture tells us he was greatly pleased. Despite his hatred towards Jesus, King Herod was a fan. He was captivated by the healings and miracles Jesus performed, entranced by his works and gifts. He plied Jesus with questions, hoping for a performance, but Jesus knew Herod wasn’t willing to become a true follower. King Herod’s attitude towards Jesus highlights the stark contrast between being a fan and a follower.

When we become faithful followers, we allow the Holy Spirit to control our lives, and he will produce this kind of fruit in us: “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22-23). The joy and peace that comes from being a follower of Jesus far surpasses the excitement of being a fan. It is a comforting reassurance that being a follower of our King of Kings and Lord of Lords is the best path to take.

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” (Matthew 4:19)

Prayer

Father God, although I’m grateful for all the gifts you give your children, being my Heavenly Father and giving me the gift of your son Jesus so I may live with you forever, is the greatest gift of all.

Application

If there is any question in your mind if you are a fan or follower of Jesus, take a moment to examine your heart. Then, lay it all down at his feet and invite him in to be the center of your life today.
