“When the goodness of God in Jesus is revealed, it leaves the world speechless.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – April 27, 2024
And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.” Mark 7:37, ESV
It is impossible to encounter Jesus Christ and be unchanged. Of course, we create cultural imitations of Christ – the wise sage, the compassionate teacher, the counter-cultural leader – each a version of Christ that may be interesting or worthy of reflection, but equally easy to dismiss and leave on the pages of history. Yet the Jesus we encounter in the Scriptures changed the world, and the world we live in today is sustained and upheld by that very same person, resurrected and ascended upon high.
In Mark 7, we are given a window into how people respond when they encounter the living Christ. When the goodness of God in Jesus is revealed, it leaves the world speechless. Like the crowds in this story, if we have truly encountered the risen Lord, not the reductionistic version we create of him, the only response is to be “astonished beyond measure.” Jesus leaves us speechless, and when we do make an attempt at words, all we can get out is, “He has done all things well.”
When we look at the life and ministry of Jesus, we see nothing less than the recreation of the world. Just as the Spirit hovered over the darkness and chaos, speaking it into being and giving it order and meaning, beauty and life, our Lord Jesus does the very same thing. He enters into a dark and chaotic world that is disordered and broken by human rebellion, yet rather than avoiding this fact, he presses into these places of chaos and brings order; he seeks out those who are sick and proclaims healing; he goes to the place of the dead and declares life!
In Genesis 1:31, we are told that “God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.” Today’s passage beautifully echoes these ancient words, and as those who live on “this side” of the cross and resurrection, we look upon everything that God has done in and through Jesus Christ, and say with astonishment beyond measure, “He has done all things well.”
