“Fear wants to give you amnesia.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – November 19, 2024
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. John 14:26
Fear wants to give you amnesia. The spirit of fear (2 Timothy 1:7) wants to make you forget what God has done for you, what Christ has made known to you, and the future promises Christ has given you. When you come to a rocky patch on the river of life, God wants to remind you of what he has told you. When you remember what God has said to you, it will be your anchor and keep you steady when your boat is rocking.
While writing this, I remembered this truth. I received a phone message that immediately brought fear on me. I had to practice walking by faith and not by sight. I had to remember what He has told me in the past about my current difficulty and then the fear disappeared. I’ll be leaning on Jesus all day.
When fear is making you panic because you envision that you’re going to drown, the Lord wants you to remember that He told you that He will undeniably deliver you and that you will make it through to the other side of the storm.
During difficult times we need to live by faith. Living by faith and focusing on what God has promised doesn’t mean ignoring the current circumstances. It doesn’t mean being a Pollyanna. It means remembering what God has said. As believers, we need to live by faith and not by feelings. Living by faith, and not by feelings means not living by our senses. It means not living by what we see, hear, and feel. When we focus on what God has said, it removes the power from fear. It’s part of resisting the devil (see James 4:7).
And, in the past, if God hasn’t told you anything about your current storm, you can ask Him if there’s anything that he wants to reveal to us about it now.
We can say something like, “Oh Lord, you are my rock and my anchor. You steady me in the present by showing me and reminding me of what you have said to me. When I am afraid, I can ask you ‘Lord what do you want me to know for this moment?’”
“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you” (Isaiah 26:3).
Prayer
Lord, thank you for your precious promises. Is there anything I need to remember that will help steady me now, to relieve me of the torment of fear and rest in your perfect peace?
