Bring to Mind

Written by Boyd Bailey

Rest, not stress, since the Holy Spirit will bring to mind what you need to remember.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – December 27, 2024

The Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name, will be your teacher and will bring to your minds all that I have said to you. John 14:26, PHILLIPS

A few years ago, while attending a silent retreat, I had the privilege of sitting with a monk as my spiritual director. Brother Marcellius tenderly covered me with wisdom for over 40 minutes, covering the topics of suffering, rejection, sin, forgiveness, joy, and church history. At the end of our conversation—really his monologue, I lamented that I had not turned on the memo feature on my iPhone. Without missing a beat, my new but old and seasoned monk friend gently reminded me, Boyd, the Holy Spirit will bring to mind whatever you need to remember. I smiled back with an Of course He will, while I mused, wow, sweet freedom in the presence of Spirit-filled love.

Because the Holy Spirit is our teacher, we can learn the transforming truths of God. If we pay close attention to our divine tutor, we notice that He teaches in a manner we can comprehend and apply to our lives. Clarity is the Spirit’s weapon to dismiss the confusion of competing voices. When He clearly shows us when to say no, we are wise enough to resist the pressure to say yes. When He leads us to go, we call up courage to infuse our will and move forward by faith. When we receive the teaching of the Spirit, it is sealed onto our minds and hearts to be recalled. John Owen, the Puritan leader, writes extensively on the Holy Spirit in The Holy Spirit: His Gifts and Power, stating, “The Spirit seals the teachings of Christ in our hearts and minds, leading us into deeper understanding and obedience.” And when unsure of what the Spirit teaches, He patiently shows us through various ways and brings to mind what He has previously shown us. The Holy Spirit’s primary resource for remembrance is refocusing us on the truth revealed in Scripture.

In Knowing God, J.I. Packer describes the Holy Spirit as the one who applies God’s Word to the believer’s heart. “The Spirit leads us to recall and apply Scripture’s truths in our lives, enabling us to see God’s will clearly.” It makes sense that the Bible, inspired by the Holy Spirit, is His chief teaching tool. Jesus’ followers must immerse their minds and souls in Scripture so the Spirit can draw deep into the well of truth and bring to mind what’s needed to live like Jesus. As we grow in humility, the illuminating work of the Holy Spirit helps us comprehend what we otherwise have misunderstood or had no clue of what to do. Humility enlarges teachability.

The Holy Spirit is your personal tutor/mentor, always present to guide and remind you of Jesus’ teachings. Ever read Scripture and suddenly feel a deeper understanding? That’s the Holy Spirit illuminating the truth for you. In moments of confusion or doubt, He brings clarity, nudging your heart with Jesus’ promises. Remember those times you felt convicted about something? That’s the Spirit gently correcting and guiding you back to God’s path. He also brings comfort through others, reminding you of Jesus’ love and faithfulness when life feels overwhelming. Whether it’s through prayer, worship, or in community, the Holy Spirit helps you recall and apply God’s Word to your daily life, ensuring that Christ’s teachings stay alive and active in your heart. Don’t stress over what you might forget that’s important; the Spirit will bring to mind what you need.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, guide me in Your truth and teach me Your ways. Help me trust You to remind me of what I need to know, and empower me to follow faithfully. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
