Can God Be Trusted?

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – December 3, 2015

Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; in you have I trusted all the day long. Psalm 25:4

I was recently traveling in a large city that I had never before visited. As is often my practice, before heading out for the day, I took a moment to ask the hotel receptionist for the best local options for food and tourism. Sure, anyone can visit a chain restaurant or visit the top sights, but I wanted the “inside scoop,” the places that one simply couldn’t miss when visiting this town. Though I had never met this man in my life, as a local resident working in the city, I trusted his recommendations implicitly and without question.

I share this story to illustrate a simple yet foundational principle in life: we follow people we trust.  Whether it is a parent, spouse, pastor, boss, or hotel receptionist, our willingness to listen to them and learn from them is directly linked to our ability to trust them.

The Psalms teach us much about the relationship between trust and discipleship. In them we find deep, heartfelt yearning to learn from the Lord and be taught his ways, yet within them we also see that this desire is linked to a lifelong trust in the character and nature of God. If God were not trustworthy, loving, and sincere, why on earth would the Psalmist want to be led by him?

Like the Psalmist, if you desire to grow in your relationship with Christ, you must grow in your desire to be led by him. And for you to follow him where he leads, you must trust him. You must believe that he loves you and will never mislead you or deceive you. You must trust that if you share your deepest fears, anxieties, and wounds, he will not mock, scold, or belittle you but will instead invite you to follow him into his life of transforming grace and love.

“All the paths of the LORD are love and faithfulness to those who keep his covenant and his testimonies” (Psalm 25:9).

To follow Jesus is to embark upon a life of adventure and excitement. There is no greater joy in life than following Christ, for as we follow him, we know that no matter where he leads us, he will protect and care for us at every step of the way. Every path he provides comes from his loving and faithful heart. May our knowledge of who God is deepen in us our trust in him and willingness to be led by him.

“Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him” (Jeremiah 17:7).

Prayer: Father, we know you are good, loving, and trustworthy in every way. May this knowledge lead us into faithful obedience and trust as we follow you.
