Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – February 26, 2020
My child, if your heart is wise, my own heart will rejoice! Everything in me will celebrate when you speak what is right. Proverbs 23:15-16
Today would have been my momma’s 80th birthday. I miss her. I miss her smile, her quirky laugh, her delicious cooking and her love for me—her oldest knucklehead son of three boys. Last weekend, my wife Rita and I met my brothers, two aunts and cousins at one of mom’s favorite restaurants (Catfish Cabin!) in honor of her life. We laughed a lot and reminisced about “Momma stories”. The time we cut down a Christmas tree, tied it to the top of our yellow Volkswagen, and somehow made it home without a wreck. Or, when she ran up and down the sidelines of my high school football games yelling at the referees (yikes!). We celebrated rich memories because Momma made all of our lives richer. Richer in curiosity, love and life!
Wise King Solomon describes a parent who celebrates the occasion of a child speaking what is right. Children who make wise choices and avoid foolishness are a cause for celebration. A reminder to parents and children to take the time to be thankful for the instruction of their parents and for the transformation of the child. Days of discipline can be long and onerous, so pleasant memories of wise speech are worth acknowledging. Victories along the way need to be enjoyed.
“The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive” (Proverbs 16:21).
The Passover celebration for the Jewish faithful is a reminder of God’s deliverance from Egyptian slavery. Our Christian Easter celebration is a reminder of our deliverance from the bondage of sin. We have this momentous occasion to worship and thank our Lord for His generous love and forgiveness. Death, sin and hell were defeated by Christ’s death on the cross and resurrection from the grave. No longer a slave to fear, we are free to be God’s beloved children.
How can we celebrate rich memories? Remember when you and/or your child or friend experienced baptism. An outward expression of the inward spiritual transformation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Baptism is such a real defining moment for all of us that love and follow the Lord Jesus. Consider an annual celebration of someone special’s spiritual birth when they celebrate their physical birthday. Make spiritual birthdays a big deal! Have the honoree describe their faith journey. Celebrating rich memories starts by remembering the riches of God’s grace.
“You know the generous grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty he could make you rich” (2 Corinthians 8:9).
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I praise you for the gift of memories that grow my gratitude and trust in you, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Application
Who has an upcoming birthday that can tell the story of her spiritual journey?
