“Jesus must have a sense of humor because we are made in His image!”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – July 16, 2023
He will yet fill your mouth with laughter, and your lips with shouting. Job 8:21
We live in a little town in the Colorado mountains where there is always tons of fun happening: people are skiing, hiking, biking, going to the lake, or throwing rocks in a mountain stream.
And wherever people are experiencing these fun activities, there is always laughter and smiles.
When I think about Jesus, I think how He must love laughter because we like to laugh, and we are made in His image. I think He must like fun because we like to have fun and we are made in His image. I even wonder if we could hear His voice in the Scriptures if we would be able to hear His sense of humor in His tone. He must have a sense of humor because we are made in His image!
Some people feel guilty for having fun, for joking around, or enjoying life. Certainly, God is stuffy, legalistic, and a no-nonsense God who is waiting to pounce when we make one wrong move. He wants us to be serious all the time, right? If we are made in His image, He cannot be this way. And this also goes against the truth of Him being loving and full of compassion. (Also, just look at the joy that He placed in babies and children!)
So, when you think about doing something that fills up your tank, or taking leisure time out, do you feel guilty? Do you feel as if God is looking down on you for enjoying life? Do you doubt that He wants you to be happy and have fun?
Perhaps you are a parent, grandparent, aunt, or uncle. Have you ever gotten tickled pink and experienced deep-down joy when one of the littles in your life giggles while splashing through a puddle? Have your eyes ever filled with happy tears when you see a child laughing and having fun? Have you ever felt happy when one of your children feeds an animal at a petting zoo?
God feels the same about us. If we experience delight when the children in our lives have fun, how much more does Jesus experience delight when we have fun!?
Is it time to think of Jesus rejoicing with you when you take time out to rest, relax, and do something that is meaningless? Is it time to imagine that He is laughing with you when you laugh? Is it time to become convinced that God wants you to have fun? Is it time to go to the lake and throw rocks?
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:27).
Prayer
Lord, always help me to remember that I am made in your image. Because this is true, you are a joy giver.
Application
Look up scriptures on joy. Choose a favorite one, write it on a note card, and memorize it.
