Enough Time and Divine Interruptions

Written by Shana Schutte

Give God permission to interrupt your day.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – November 5, 2024

My times are in your hand. . .  Psalm 31:15

I’m in a slow-down time. But it wasn’t always so. The only reason I’m not rushing and filling my calendar is because I have been forced to slow down. A cancer health crisis has taken me from rushing through life to taking a slow walk.

Previously, I never thought much about time. My death was “out there” somewhere far into the future. In my mind, I had lots of time. But lately, I feel as if I don’t have enough time to do what I need to do. I can see the end of my life from here, because more of it’s passed than is ahead of me, and it’s creating pressure. Pressure to be purposeful with what time I have been given.

Like the psalmist, we are to “number our days” to gain a heart of wisdom. But feeling as if we don’t have enough time isn’t a right perspective. Because, what we’re really saying is we don’t have enough time to do what God wants us to do—and as a result, we may dismiss people. We may miss the ministry opportunities that are right in front of us.

When you walk according to God’s Spirit, you listen for Him and give Him the right to interrupt your day, with coworkers in the office, with a woman’s problem at the grocery store. You give God permission to use you because people are what are closest to God’s heart.

It’s not that you don’t have any boundaries. It’s just that you give God space to use you. You humble yourself and ask God what He wants to do. Or, you wake in the morning and tell Him that you give Him permission to stop you throughout the day and give you divine appointments.

I’m working on putting this into practice. A couple of days ago, I was at the post office. There was a woman slowly moving down the steps. She looked as if she was in pain. I stopped and asked her what happened. She told me her story, and that she had osteoporosis. We chatted for a short while and then I asked her if I could pray for her. We stopped on the steps, held hands and lifted up Jesus and asked him to come and help her. We said goodbye and I got in my car, thankful that God interrupted me.

Prayer

Lord, thank you so much that you have given me everything I need for life and godliness. I don’t need to rush. All I need to do is listen to you. Lord, is there anyone you want me to minister to today?
