Enough Time for God’s Will

Written by Boyd Bailey

You can rest and be grateful that there is enough time to do God’s will, and that is enough.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – July 29, 2024

My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.  John 4:34

Imagine, if you will, a clock ticking incessantly in the background of your life. It is not a benign, friendly clock, but one whose ticking seems to speed up as the days go by, reminding you of all the unfinished tasks and unfulfilled ambitions. This clock is not a product of heaven but made on earth. It is a device of your own making, a manifestation of your anxious, restless heart that has lost sight of a fundamental truth: there is enough time to do God’s will.

In his rich and thoughtful style, C.S. Lewis explores the intersection of time and eternity. His creative masterpiece, The Screwtape Letters, reminds us that we are God’s creations made for eternity, living in the finite confines of time. Our obsession with time, our frantic rush to accomplish, achieve, and acquire, blinds us to the deeper, quieter work that the Holy Spirit is healing our inner being. Lewis would have us remember that God, the creator of time, is never hurried. He is patient, deliberate, and purposeful. Like Jesus, we can prayerfully walk in the Spirit.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus declares, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work” (John 4:34). Jesus, who had the weight of the world’s salvation on His shoulders, moved with a divine sense of timing. He was never rushed, never frantic. He spent thirty years in relative obscurity and only three years in active ministry. Yet, at the end of His life, He could say to the Father, “I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do” (John 17:4). Finishing well is walking in pace with your Father’s will for you.

Our problem is not with the amount of time we have but with our priorities. We fill our days with tasks that flirt with the trivial in the light of eternity. We are like Martha, busy and distracted by many things when only one thing is necessary: to sit at the feet of Jesus, to listen, to learn, to love. Consider this: the Lord, who has numbered our days, has also ordained our tasks. He knows what is essential and what is not. When we align our lives with His will, we discover a rhythm, a pace that is both peaceful and purposeful. We find that there is indeed enough time to do what He has called us to do.

Wisdom and trust focus on the importance of living in the present moment, the now, which is the intersection of time and eternity. Wisdom encourages us to trust that God has given us this moment, this day, with enough time to do His will. Our frantic rush is not a sign of diligence but of misplaced priorities. Faith pumps the brakes of busyness and slows down to experience Love.

In the quiet surrender of your schedule to God, you find freedom. Freedom from the tyranny of the urgent, freedom from the pressure to perform, and freedom to be present, to be still, and to know that He is God. In this freedom, you discover the liberating truth that there is enough time to do God’s will, and in doing so, you find your true peace and purpose. Trust in the divine timing of your Lord who loves you, His beloved. Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. In the end, you can rest and be grateful that there is enough time to do God’s will, and that is enough.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, grant me the wisdom to recognize that Your timing is perfect. Help me trust that there is always enough time to accomplish Your will. Guide my steps, clear my mind of distractions, and fill my heart with peace, knowing You provide all I need. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
