“The resurrection of Christ makes possible the impossible.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – April 8, 2021
But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 1 Corinthians 15:20 (ESV)
The resurrection of Christ makes possible the impossible. In his death he joined himself to the fate of the entire human race, yet in his resurrection he joins humanity to the divine life of God. Death no longer has the final word. Life is offered to all and is made available to young and old, rich and poor alike. As Jesus himself said, “Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.” John 11:25-26
As glorious and beautiful as this truth is, we today must sit with the fact that, though this way of life is available to all, it is not guaranteed that all will walk in the way of life. The resurrection gives the option for immortality to the human race, yet it is entirely possible for us, in our blindness and sickness, to prefer the way of death and reject the way of Christ that leads to life. The potential for life with Christ in eternity cannot be separated from an abiding life of obedience in the present.
I’ll illustrate this with a simple example from my own life. Recently, my wife and I dedicated an entire weekend to planting trees and shrubs at our home, successfully putting over 60 plants in the ground. Though this practice is as old as humanity itself, for me this is a relatively new endeavor, and I was overcome by the wonder of it all. In many ways, it felt almost magical or supernatural.
The potential for life contained in the ground underneath our feet is overwhelming! The fact that a sapling that fits in the palm of my hand can become a towering tree is more than I can even begin to process. Even more so, that tiny sapling was made to become a tree- it is the purpose for which it was created.
As a human being, you were made for eternal life with God. In his incarnation, death, and resurrection, Jesus Christ opens again the path which we were always meant to walk upon. Yet, like a tree planted in the ground, the potential for life must be regularly cultivated. Though it is possible for a plant to grow and flourish, if its life is not tended to with daily intentionality, it will wither and die.
Easter is a celebration of restoration. Choose today to walk in the way of life, and as you look to Jesus Christ, see in him the possibility of your own healing and renewal. Alleluia! Christ is Risen!
Prayer
Father, help us by your grace to walk in the way of freedom and resurrection life, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
