Gift of Sabbath

Written by Boyd Bailey

Our Creator’s pattern of work and rest is part of our human design.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – March 3, 2025

The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Mark 2:27

The term “Sabbath” comes from the Hebrew word “Shabbat,” which means “to cease” or “to rest.” It is observed as a time to pause from work and focus on God, family, and spiritual renewal. God modeled the sabbath for His beloved by resting on the seventh day of creation, Genesis 2:2-3. Our Creator’s pattern of work and rest is part of our human design. Without rest, our work is all about us, but with rest, our work is all about laboring for the Lord. Are you running so hard through life that you are running right past a life that is truly life in Christ? Consider giving yourself permission to sabbath. Cease from work while you rest and trust God.

Jesus makes clear that the Sabbath is for our benefit, without having to do more. A gift to be received from the Lord of the Sabbath, not just another day for us to do anything we want. Jesus’ freeing ideas threatened the religious leaders for fear of losing control. Indeed, a gift from God is not to be redefined by men for their purposes but about honoring God and His priorities. Our Creator knows His beloved requires a spiritual, emotional, and physical recharge. Without this investment of time for renewal, we risk damaging our faith, health, and relationships.

Neglecting the Sabbath can significantly affect your faith, health, and relationships. When you’re constantly on the move, always working, or overloading your schedule, it’s easy to drift away from God. You miss the quiet moments that allow you to refocus and reconnect with Him. Physically, skipping rest leads to burnout—your body and mind aren’t designed to operate non-stop. You end up feeling exhausted, stressed, and less effective in everything you pursue. And let’s not overlook relationships. When you’re too busy, quality time with family and friends diminishes. Observing a Sabbath isn’t merely about following a rule; it’s about making space for what truly matters—God, your well-being, and the people you love. Enjoy the gift of Sabbath.

Enjoying the Sabbath doesn’t have to be complicated—it’s about slowing down and reflecting on what truly matters. Start by setting aside work and distractions. Put your phone down, step away from your to-do list, and take a deep breath. Spend time with God—whether through prayer, reading Scripture, or simply praising His goodness. Worship with others at church and gather with your family at home. Appreciate nature; take a serene walk and enjoy God’s creation. Connect with loved ones over a shared meal, laughter, and meaningful conversations. The Sabbath is also a wonderful opportunity for self-care—rest, recharge, and engage in activities that bring you joy, like reading, journaling, or pursuing a hobby. The key is to embrace the gift of rest, trusting that the Lord has everything under control. When you honor the Sabbath, you create space to experience God’s peace and deepen your relationships with Him and others.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of the Sabbath. Help me to embrace rest, refocus on You, and cherish time with loved ones. Refresh my soul and renew my spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
