God is Good All the Time

Written by Pat Elsberry

Be open with God – He already knows how you’re feeling. He knows every thought in your heart and mind.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – January 26, 2025

Give thanks to the Lord for he is good and his love endures forever. Psalm 106:1

Many African Christians use a greeting that says, “God is good all the time.” The person receiving the greeting replies, “All the time, God is good.” Over the years, I’ve heard this expression, which gained popularity after it was used in the 2014 movie God’s Not Dead.

A friend once asked me: Is God really good all the time? This seems like a trite cliché, especially when you consider there are many sufferings throughout the world. Is God good when you receive a diagnosis that your child has cancer or your marriage is ending? Let’s be honest. It’s tempting to doubt God’s goodness during the many adversities we face in life, right?

As a Christ follower, if you find your world has been upended, let’s turn to Job. Imagine the countless times he must have questioned God’s goodness as he faced one setback after another. Job’s friends were waiting for him to denounce God. I can picture them sitting there, saying, “This will be the day Job says God is not good!” But that day never came. Job’s unwavering faith in God, despite his circumstances, is truly inspiring.

Job never fully cursed God outright, although he questioned Him and expressed his deep frustration that God would allow these things to occur. He may not have understood what was happening, but he knew this one thing: Job knew God was good all the time. He knew God was always loving and trustworthy, and whatever he was going through right now was not permanent. God would make a way out and through.

Friends, if you’re going through a challenging time in your life, and you’re questioning God’s goodness, remember Job. Be open with God – He already knows how you’re feeling. He knows every thought in your heart and mind. You can question him, be angry, and yell, but in the end, take a page from the Book of Job and lean further into God. Hold on tighter to the hem of His garment and remember, His word and promises are true. “Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever” (Psalm 23:6, NLT). His promises give us hope in the midst of our trials.

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).

Prayer

Father God, as we walk through times of trials and adversity, please help me to hold on to your promises and remember you are indeed good, all the time.

Application

What promise of God can you hold tightly to as you walk through your trial?
