“You can trust His heart when you do not understand His hand.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – August 14, 2022
He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he. Deuteronomy 32:4
Yesterday, my husband and I began a trip to drive from our home in Colorado to my hometown in Southern Idaho. Before we arrived at my mother’s today, we made an impromptu stop at my high school which sits in the country between two rural communities not far from Twin Falls.
As we pulled up to the school, I immediately noticed the concrete stairs in front of the main doors where I stood with forty-seven classmates for a photo shoot on the day we graduated. I ran to the top of the stairs and stopped in my spot. “I stood right here for our senior graduation pic!” I exclaimed to my husband.
I stopped and waited for him to take a snapshot recreating a little mini memory of years gone by.
Then, it was as if a mental scrapbook opened. Memories of the years during and after high school washed over me. Memories of struggle, memories of pain, and memories of God’s blessings and faithfulness. Oh! How far I’ve come!
I’m not the same girl who stood on those steps over thirty-six years ago. I have been transformed! But there were times in the years between my high school class photo and the photo my husband took today when I wondered if the knots of my life would ever be untangled—and I certainly didn’t feel like an overcomer.
I had a lot of unanswered questions about why things happened the way they did; I had a lot of emotional pain I felt I would never overcome; I had many struggles that didn’t make sense at the time.
But there I stood today. Same stairs. Similar photo. Transformed woman. Faithful God.
I can look back now and see His faithfulness, but it’s taken time to fully recognize it. Certainly, He can immediately deliver, but there have mostly been moments when He has chosen to sustain and uphold me through trials instead.
Maybe you can relate.
Be encouraged! While He is bringing you through a trial and while you are waiting to fully see His answers, He is being faithful to you in ways you cannot yet see, transforming you in ways you will only be able to fully understand after you have moved through the trial, passed through the trouble, and come out the other side.
Then, when you are experiencing a moment like I did standing on the stairs of my school, you’ll clearly see how He has changed and transformed you, not because He immediately delivered you, but because He didn’t immediately deliver you.
Sometimes God’s biggest gifts come in packages we could never anticipate. You can trust His heart when you do not understand His hand. He will always be faithful to you, even when His deliverance or answers seem delayed.
“For the word of the Lord is right and true; he is faithful in all he does” (Psalm 33:4).
Prayer
Lord, I choose to trust you that even if I don’t see your answers and I don’t see your deliverance, that you will ultimately prove faithful. I love you, Jesus. Amen.
