“During this Christmas season—perhaps more than ever—the world needs hope.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – December 17, 2023
My future is in your hands. Psalm 31:15, NLT
During this Christmas season—perhaps more than ever—the world needs hope.
We need hope that comes from knowing we are safe. We need hope that comes from being confident the future will be okay. We need hope that comes from knowing there is hope. Good news! There is indeed abundant hope because He is Lord over all! Jesus didn’t only come into the world to save us from our sins. He came to put all things under His authority and right every wrong. What a comfort when times are difficult, uncertain, and the ground beneath our feet feels shaky.
When so many voices want us to believe they have the ultimate power to guide our lives, decide for our lives, or ruin our lives, Jesus proclaims, “All authority belongs to me and all that concerns you is in my hands (Psalm 138:8). It may not seem like it now, but one day my power will be fully revealed. In the future, when I bring all things in heaven and earth together under my authority and rule, you will clearly behold my power. But for now, you must trust. You must trust I am working all things out to my desired end, for your good, for the good of humanity, and for my glory. All things are in my control and I love you. As you trust me, you will experience the hope that comes from being firmly planted in Me.”
Jesus has ultimate rule over all that live. He is never surprised by anything that happens in our lives or in the nations. He is seated far above all rule and authority, all power and dominion, and every title that can be given now and in the age to come (Ephesians 1:21). There is no king, no president, no ruler, or judge who has ultimate power. All powers are subjected to Him (1 Peter 3:22). Now He has all authority. In the future, we will fully know and see that authority in action.
He is the King and the King over all. During uncertain and difficult times, we must keep our eyes firmly fixed on Him (Hebrews 12:2) as we wait for His good, beautiful, and redemptive plan to unfold.
This is our certain hope: He alone is God.
“For who is God besides the Lord? And who is the Rock except our God” (Psalm 18:31)?
Prayer
Lord, thank you that you have all authority in heaven and on earth. Thank you that you are loving and kind too! All power belongs to you and all things are working out to your desired—and good—end. I love you, Jesus. Amen.
Application
Take a few minutes and imagine what it will be like when Jesus brings all things together, in heaven and earth, under His authority. What will that kind of blessed existence be like? Just imagine!
