Good Holy Spirit

Written by Boyd Bailey

The good Holy Spirit fills a good heart and molds it into a heart after God’s heart.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – April 9, 2025

You gave your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold your manna from their mouths, and you gave them water for their thirst. Nehemiah 9:20

Nehemiah’s prayer is compelling, as the Israelites confess their sins while recalling God’s faithfulness throughout history. Nehemiah leads the people in acknowledging how, despite their ancestors’ disobedience, the Lord remained merciful. The context is Israel’s wilderness wandering after their liberation from Egypt. Though they repeatedly rebelled, God sustained them with manna, water from the rock, and His Spirit to guide them. Nehemiah recognizes that the same Spirit who led Israel in the desert was still guiding them now as they rebuilt Jerusalem and restored their faith. The Holy Spirit provided wisdom, instruction, and strength as they faced opposition while rebuilding Jerusalem’s walls. God’s Spirit remains present, guiding and providing for His people despite difficult circumstances. Just as Nehemiah relied on the Spirit’s guidance, believers today can trust in this same divine presence. Goodness comes from God.

A humble follower of Jesus wisely remembers the work of the Holy Spirit. We recall how God’s Spirit hovered over chaos before bringing forth His beautiful creation. We are awed by the Holy Spirit’s role in leading thousands to faith on the day of Pentecost. We often celebrate the Spirit’s impact on personal salvation as well as on the salvation of friends and family. We rejoice that God freely gives the Holy Spirit to those who seek Him, just as loving parents give good gifts to their children. Never forget that the Spirit of God is your engine of faith for Kingdom work.

Where is the Holy Spirit guiding and empowering you to rebuild? Perhaps a relationship has been damaged. Rebuilding a relationship requires patience, humility, and forgiveness. It starts with honest conversations, taking responsibility for mistakes, and choosing to heal rather than cling to past pain. Trust is rebuilt over time through consistency and grace. Prayer and love create a solid foundation. When both hearts are open, broken relationships can be restored and strengthened by the Holy Spirit and renewed through the Spirit’s wisdom and guidance. Like Nehemiah, you may face enemies attacking your efforts to rebuild relational trust. Pray for your enemies and ignore their ploys to stir up dissension and jealousy. Stay in the healing process.

Draw inspiration from Nehemiah’s prayer playbook and trust the Holy Spirit to connect you with individuals who possess different gifts than your own, enabling you to fulfill the Lord’s will. Recognizing that you are not in control and that others may be wiser and more qualified than you positions you as an ideal candidate for the Spirit to employ for God’s glory. Show care for your team, and they will want to care for those you are called to serve. Resource each individual according to their unique abilities, and they will be confidently prepared to carry out their roles and responsibilities with excellence. The Holy Spirit shows favor to humble servants who pray. Praying in the power of the Holy Spirit entails surrendering to His guidance and allowing Him to intercede, strengthen, and align your heart with God’s will, bringing wisdom, peace, and divine breakthrough. The good Holy Spirit fills a good heart and molds it into a heart after God’s heart.

Holy Spirit, You are good and faithful. Lead me in truth, fill me with wisdom, and strengthen me in faith. Help me walk in Your presence and power each day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
