Have you noticed that everything grows from something and that nothing comes from nothing? A tree grows from a seed, love grows from respect, a good painting grows from good talent, and love grows from God.
Believing God can’t be trusted or that He is unfaithful always grows from something too: it grows from deception. If you look around and focus on all the tragedy and evil in the world, or focus on your own personal hurts, there are plenty of reasons to believe God isn’t good, that He isn’t in control or that He doesn’t care. There is plenty of “evidence” that God can’t be trusted. But this is a lie. Whenever we fall into the trap of believing the devil’s lies about God, we are focusing on circumstances, rather than living by faith.
Deception about God, His love for us, and who we are to Him can grow in our hearts when—Satan, the father of lies (John 8:44) convinces us that God doesn’t love us, that He’s a liar, unfair, a bully intent on hurting and punishing us, or a wimp unable to handle the affairs of our lives and the world. These lies aren’t grounded in truth but are often fueled through our unstable emotions which cannot be trusted. Many of Satan’s lies about God’s love, about who we are to Him, or about His involvement in our lives can cause us to believe God isn’t good when it looks like He isn’t good. But we must walk by faith and not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7).
I once watched a documentary on the beautiful Farrah Fawcett that detailed her battle with cancer. In one scene she was speaking with her father, and he said he was praying for her or, as he put it, “talking to the man upstairs” and asking Him for healing. Farrah asked her dad why God doesn’t always answer prayer—and her dad replied that sometimes God is just too busy. Too busy? Who can trust a god who’s so busy he ignores his creation and isn’t powerful enough to manage the affairs of the world? Who can trust a god who doesn’t really love us?
In 1967 seventeen-year-old Joni Eareckson Tada dove off a rock into shallow water, broke her neck, and became a quadriplegic. She also believed God was too busy and that He had abandoned her. Joni thought that just as she was getting ready to dive into the water, God had become distracted with someone else’s problems and turned His back.
The late author C. S. Lewis believed a different lie about God after his wife’s death. At the time, he chronicled his painful feelings in a very transparent book titled A Grief Observed. Lewis didn’t believe that God was too busy but rather that He was cold and distant:
Meanwhile, where is God? A door slammed in your face, and a sound of bolting and double bolting on the inside. After that, silence . . . There are no lights in the windows. Why is He so present a commander in our time of prosperity and so very absent a help in time of trouble?
When life is hard, when we hurt, when those we love hurt, or when evil is running rampant in our world, we must choose to walk by faith and not by sight and reject Satan’s lies about our loving God. We must acknowledge that we don’t have the whole story yet, but we will—and then all things will make sense. God will make everything good and right in his time. Don’t allow disappointment or evil to cause you to turn your heart away from the One who truly loves you and loves His creation.
“The Rock! His work is perfect, For all His ways are just; A God of faithfulness and without injustice, Righteous and upright is He” (Deuteronomy 32:4).
Prayer
Lord, you are trustworthy, faithful, all-loving, and all powerful. I know the story you are writing will work out in the end. I trust you. Amen.
