“God is working in your waiting.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – February 6, 2024
Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. Psalm 27:14
During the first few months of my cancer crisis beginning in the summer of 2023, I wrestled with so much physical pain and fear that it seemed as if almost every second was a spoken—or unspoken—prayer that breathed out of my soul in pleading! “Lord! Please heal me!”
Then, came my first pet scan. I was so grateful for the excellent news. The doctor said, “If your cancer was a 10 before, now it’s a 3!” My prayers for healing turned into prayers of praise. “Jesus! You are amazing! There is no God like you. Thank you! Thank you!”
But then just two months after my good report, fear started to creep in while waiting to go back to the hospital a third time. But in this waiting, I remembered that nothing has changed. I am still the Lord’s beloved daughter. I am His precious creation. I am still safe in His hands and fear is not my inheritance. There is no need to beg God for favor. I already have it—and you already have it too.
In the waiting, in between our problem and the promise, nothing has changed. God still wants to care for me and you and rescue us.
And (praise the Lord!) in the waiting, there is purpose. Waiting time is not wasted time. While you wait for God’s full deliverance, He is changing you, making you into someone new, not just healing your body (if that is your request), but also healing your mind, your will, and your emotions. He’s purifying your motives. We want to automatically get to the answer. We want Him to immediately deliver us—and He can certainly do that if He chooses. But sometimes He chooses to work in our waiting instead because rushing to the answer may mean that we miss out on the precious gift of the transformation of our souls.
After my diagnosis, I spent some time with one of my pastors. He, too, had his own health crisis and almost died from Covid. He was in a coma for over three weeks. He said to me, “There are some things that can only be changed in us through crisis.” I asked him how the experience changed him. He said, “I was more selfish and driven. Everything was about ministry. I was about performance. Now I’m much more humble and patient.”
God is working in our waiting. We want the answer now. God wants our hearts and our whole beings to be transformed so that we are completely His. He wants to sanctify us in the waiting. He wants to know that we are fully committed to Him because that’s where abundant life is. That’s where joy is. That’s where we are safe.
Perhaps you are waiting on God to deliver you from something. Maybe you want Him to heal your body, heal a relationship, heal a child, or heal your career. Be encouraged! He is working in your waiting. He still sees you. And, in His due time, He will fully deliver you into a new season, out into a wide and open spacious place. God is working in your waiting. but in the meantime, He is at work in you even when it seems that nothing is happening. Choose to trust His timing.
“Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer” (Romans 12:12).
Prayer
Lord, it’s difficult to wait for you. But I choose faith during this waiting time, knowing that you are at work, not only to answer my prayers, but you are at work in me, too. I treasure my relationship with you. Thank you for making me more like you in my waiting. Amen.
Application
Tell the Lord that you believe that He is working in you in your waiting and that you are open to what he wants to do in you while you wait.
