“Divine help is a generous gift that converts weeping hearts to hearts that exult with a song of thanksgiving to the giver of all good gifts.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today –July 10, 2023
The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him. Psalm 28:7, ESV
Sometimes we feel helpless. Helpless to know what to do and helpless fearing what the future might hold. Worst-case scenarios have a way of screaming louder than the soft, calming voice of the Spirit. Physical pain without a clear path for healing is one of the hardest times to manage expectations. The body can seem like a loyal friend one day and overnight can be betrayed by an ailment. Where do we turn when we are not sure what to do…a solution for the problem does not have a clear path, only uncertain possibilities. Thankfully we have a divine helper who cares.
This psalm in the night from David is a cry to God for inner strength in his weakness and for outer protection for his physical safety. A physical threat was a very real outward force that he faced, so he leaned into the company of the Lord’s angels for his bodily protection. Inwardly, his strength of spirit, soul, and emotions were energized by his Creator’s comfort, wisdom, and hope. In his time of trouble, David trusted in the One who was his rock and salvation, God Almighty. Divine help is a generous gift that converts weeping hearts to hearts that exult with a song of thanksgiving to the giver of all good gifts. Brave faith seeks God’s help.
“God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1).
Your fretful flesh may be longing for relief and a return to good health. Prayer is the steady diet of a body afflicted, seeking and hoping for healthy solutions. Cry out to Christ, He hears and He helps. Words may be absent, but the cry of your heart is the Holy Spirit’s opportunity to pray on your behalf as Jesus intercedes to the Father for you. And with the abundance of the Trinity’s love, you are helped by your Father’s mercy. Consider a rhythm of reading out loud written prayers morning, noon, and night. When you awake, before you turn on any technology, first invite the Lord to center your life, at noon celebrate the cross and resurrection of Jesus, and at night pray for your body’s peaceful rest and for those who are waiting on God. Prayer helps.
God’s help is accessible, generous, and sustaining. Adult children, when experiencing a challenge and who have a trusting relationship with their parents, will reach out for help: for wisdom, prayer, financial support, encouragement, etc. And a mom and dad who really know their child will be able to discern the best help for her or him. In a child’s moment of angst, comfort and care are always helpful. When the relationship is strong over years of time and love, reassuring words of wisdom and truth help give guidance and reminders of God’s broader plan. If parents know how to give generous help, how much more does your Father in heaven? The Lord is your strength and shield. He sustains you in your pain and gives you joy to proclaim.
“And if even sinful persons like yourselves give children what they need, don’t you realize that your heavenly Father will do at least as much, and give the Holy Spirit to those who ask for him?” (Luke 11:13, TLB).
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to seek help from you, my strength and my shield, through Christ’s love and in Jesus’ name.
