“Aspire to be a person whose “yes” carries a great weight.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – September 14, 2023
Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil. Matthew 5:37, ESV
Throughout life, you and I will have opportunities that come our way, both big and small. Perhaps you’re invited to go on a trip with friends or family members. Or, you may be asked to volunteer your time at your child’s school or to join a committee at church. Perhaps the opportunities for you are more personal in nature, such as a decision to join a gym or significantly alter your diet for better health.
One of the great challenges in life is coming to the realization that there will always be more opportunities presented to you than you have the capacity to take on. This is difficult, especially when they are opportunities that align with our passions and skill sets! It’s easy to assume that our answer must be yes if we care deeply about the ministry or organization, and know that our involvement would be a great boost to their work. Yet as anyone who has found themselves in a similar situation knows, a hastiness to offer a “yes” may build excitement in the moment, yet often leads only to deeper frustration and confusion down the road.
Aspire to be a person whose “yes” carries a great weight. Meaning, though you may take longer to deliberate than others, carefully weighing the opportunity alongside your availability in this season, if and when you do say “yes,” people know it means something, that you will see through your commitment and be a reliable and deeply dependable leader.
For this to happen, you must learn to hold your “yes.” Resist the impulse to say “yes” as soon as you’re asked, or the instant something pops into your mind, tempting as this may be! Instead, carefully weigh the opportunity and seek counsel from those closest to you. Ask your spouse or someone else with whom you live in close community to help you discern the opportunity, with questions like, “Does my saying ‘yes’ to this opportunity mean I need to say ‘no’ to something else?” “Do I have the capacity to take on another commitment in this season?” “How would my ‘yes’ impact you, both positively or negatively?”
As we cultivate this habit of patient and deliberate discernment, by the grace of God, we will slowly but surely become men and women whose “yes” means yes and whose “no” means no.
Prayer
Father, help us to be men and women of integrity, who discern in wisdom when to say “yes” and when to say “no,” through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Application
What “yes” are you discerning in this present season of life? Consider discussing the questions listed above with your spouse or a close friend in order to help you make a wise and faithful decision.
