How Did I Do?

Written by Boyd Bailey

Faithfulness is about doing the little things well daily.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – October 16, 2024

[Jesus], Excellent. You’ve proved yourself not only clever but loyal. You’ve executed a rather small task masterfully, so now I am going to put you in charge of something larger. But before you go back to work, come join my great feast and celebration. Matthew 25:23, VOICE

My friend Bill sent our book club text thread a 37-second video reel of a question asked of Jonathan Roumie, who portrays Jesus in the television series The Chosen. What question would you ask Jesus over coffee or tea?  “How did I do?” was his reply. I like this question and answer so much! So much because he didn’t ask if his doctrine was perfect or if his moral standards were superior. Instead, he humbly asks, “How did I do Jesus?” In Your strength, did I love You well, did I love others well, and did I invite You into a deep, abiding love relationship of intimacy reflected in my life, hopefully growing more and more like You? How did I do Jesus?

What would a conversation with you and Jesus look like today? Consider a gentle and caring dialogue something like this: Jesus, how did I do today? I’ve tried to follow You, but I’m unsure. Was I faithful in the small things? Did I show enough love? My child, you are loved not because of what you do but because of who I am. I see your heart and desire to serve, and I am with you. But I feel like I fell short—when I was impatient, when I ignored someone in need when I let fear control my actions. Did I miss what You were asking me to do? There will always be moments when you feel like you fall short. But remember, it’s not about perfection. It’s about trusting Me, leaning on My strength when you’re weak. My strength is made perfect in you.

When you seek Me, even in your struggles, you’re growing. So, even when I don’t feel I did well, you’re still working in me? Yes, always. I see every effort, every small step you take toward loving others. And I am shaping you through both the successes and the setbacks. Keep trusting, keep walking with Me. Thank You, Jesus. I’ll keep seeking You and resting in Your love more deeply. And I’ll continue to guide you. Remember, I’m with you every step. You are never alone in this journey. Keep your heart open to Me; I will lead you into My abundant life.

Hopefully, that creative dialogue can be a form of prayer for us. But what about when we stand before Jesus at the end of our lives? What will that look like? What should we expect? So, you are standing before Jesus and hear Him say, “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23). What a moment that will be! But how do you live in a way that leads to this beautiful affirmation? It’s not about doing big, impressive things but about being faithful in the everyday moments. God sees your heart in the small acts of obedience—serving with love, being kind to those around you, and using your gifts for His glory. Faithfulness is about consistency, showing up day after day, trusting Him with what He’s given you. When you live with a heart to serve and honor God in everything, you’re preparing to hear those words—“Well done”—because you’ve been faithful in the little things He’s entrusted to you. Get ready to celebrate with Jesus!

Prayer

Lord, help me to be a faithful servant in all that I do. Teach me to honor You in the small things and trust You with the big things. May my heart be committed to serving You with love, humility, and consistency so that my life reflects Your glory. Amen.
