Jesus – Our Wonderful Counselor

Written by Pat Elsberry

Jesus doesn’t have office hours. In fact, there is never a time his office is closed. He’s always available, anytime, day or night.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – December 15, 2024

For unto us a child is born; unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder. These will be his royal titles: “Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6, TLB

There are times in life when we need someone to simply listen to us without judgment —someone to hear us out—our thoughts, fears, and questions. Then, there are times when we need direction, advice, and discernment on how to handle certain situations that arise in life. How reassuring is it to know that Jesus, our Wonderful Counselor, can guide us through difficult decisions, comfort us in times of sorrow, and provide wisdom in moments of confusion.

Unlike earthly counselors with strict office hours who are often booked weeks in advance, Jesus doesn’t have office hours. His availability is not bound by time or schedule. His office is never closed, and he’s always there for you, anytime, day or night. This unique availability is a privilege we have as His followers.

It’s incredible to think he can be conversing with someone else, but he doesn’t ignore you or tell you to wait until he’s finished with that person. He is always available to us. Whenever we call, he immediately comes. Even when we may be running in the other direction, what does he do? He comes to find us.

We can run to one of our best friends and ask for their opinion about something, but they will provide you with just that – their opinion. When we run to Jesus, our Wonderful Counselor, he will provide us with the best outcome because he is the Alpha and the Omega – a title that signifies his omniscience, meaning he knows the beginning from the end. This means his counsel is not just based on his understanding of the present situation, but on his knowledge of the entire situation from start to finish.

When Jesus died on the cross, he left us with the most amazing gift—the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit, a part of the triune God, lives within us, leading and guiding us through every step of life. There have been many times when I’ve wandered in the wrong direction. In hindsight, those times happened when I didn’t ask for his help or consult with the best counselor and guide I have living right within me.

Jesus’ position as our Wonderful Counselor means we can trust Him to listen to our problems and guide us in the best direction. (Proverbs 3:5-6). We can be confident that our Wonderful Counselor has our best interests in mind because He loves us with an everlasting love – a love that provides us with the utmost security and comfort.

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you” (Psalm 32:8)
