“As we fix our eyes on our Jesus, the Holy Spirit will lead and guide us in the way we are supposed to go.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – October 13, 2024
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33
Although I’m not a huge country music fan, I really like Carrie Underwood. I remember first being introduced to her on the American Idol stage. The introductory piece showed her surrounded by her animals on her parents’ farm in Checotah, OK. Carrie has had many hits, but one that sticks in my mind is Jesus Take the Wheel. The song title is a metaphor for asking Jesus to be in control of our lives. Sometimes, that’s easier said than done.
How many times in your life have you gone full steam ahead making plans without consulting the one who knows best? There is a saying, “We make plans, and God laughs.” I’m not sure if he actually laughs at us, but I can imagine him shaking his head as we wax on about all the things we are planning without consulting him first.
God has a plan for all of our lives, and if we learn to seek after him initially, we will probably save ourselves a lot of time and trouble. I mentioned in a previous devotion that I had written down some impactful statements made in the movie The Forge. One of the lines was by Miss Clara, a prayer warrior in the film. She said, “Prayer can’t be treated like a spare tire. No! It has to be treated like the steering wheel. You’ve gotta hold on to it tightly everywhere you go!” Such wise words and something we should all take to heart.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t want anything in my life that resembles a spare tire. I want Jesus to be the steering wheel in my life. We can get so far off course when we start traveling down a road without seeking our Father’s face and will for our lives. The artist, Consumed by Fire, sums it up this way:
First thing’s first
I seek Your will
Not my own
Surrender all my wants to you
Keep the first thing first
To live Your truth
Walk Your ways
Set my eyes
Lord I fix my face on you
All my desires reversed
To keep the first thing first
As we fix our eyes on our Jesus, the Holy Spirit will lead and guide us in the way we are supposed to go.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11).
Prayer
Lord, as we walk through our day-to-day life may we seek your face first. During those times when we find ourselves along a bumpy, winding road please take the wheel and place us on the smooth path you desire for us to be on.
Application
If you find yourself in the middle of something you’re unsure about, ask Jesus to take the wheel and redirect your steps. Then trust the Holy Spirit to lead you in the right direction.
