Just Enough Light for the Step I’m On

Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track. Don’t assume that you know it all. Run to God! Proverbs 3:5-6, MSG

Are you a planner? Do you prefer to have your week, month, or even year mapped out in advance? Or are you a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants kind of person? Maybe total spontaneity is what inspires you.

Of those two extremes, I fall into the planner category. In fact, at the end of every year, my husband and I always sit down together, calendars in hand, and begin planning the big rock items we see coming up the following year. Being proactive, whether in my professional or personal life, is just how I’m wired. I’ve always considered this a positive trait, but it could be viewed as more of a control issue – and perhaps it is.

Over the past several months, I’ve been praying about making some significant changes in my life. While seeking the Lord’s direction and waiting on Him, I’ve had to remind myself that His timing isn’t mine. In our microwave society, where everything is instantaneous, it took me a moment to realize that God wasn’t ignoring me. He was preparing me.

While praying one day, I heard Him whisper, “I’m giving you just enough light for the step you’re on. I’ll give you what you need at the right time. Trust me.”

I think God delights in the fact that we have to wait on Him. Like a good father, He takes these opportunities to teach us things.

He reminds me that He is ultimately in control and will let me in on His plan at just the right time. I trust Him, but if I’m being honest, sometimes I’ve found the waiting to be a little frustrating. I imagine him with a slight smile, shaking his head when He hears me quietly whisper, “Oh, Daddy, can’t you just tell me this one thing – right now?”

Over the years, I’ve learned that He doesn’t give us everything all at once. If He did, we might be overwhelmed or frightened. Depending on what it is, we could feel inadequate when he calls us to do the hard things. So, I’ll sit here and wait patiently, knowing He gives us what we need at the right time.

“The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him” (Lamentations 3:25, ESV).

Prayer

Father God, please continue to show me it’s you that I can trust with every aspect of my life. Even when I get impatient during the waiting season, remind me that your timing is perfect, and you have my best interest in mind.

Application

Take a moment and ask yourself today: Am I trusting God with all areas of my life and will wait on Him to reveal things to me in His timing?
