Leaders Who Love Well

Written by Boyd Bailey

When leaders humbly serve, they break the spell over power by deflating pride and ego.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – February 17, 2025

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. Philippians 2:3-4

A leader’s open-handed relationship to power and commitment to honesty indicates how well he loves. Abraham Lincoln’s humility and service disarmed him from lording power over others. Lincoln’s presidency was characterized by his empathy and commitment to unity during the Civil War. He often visited battlefields and hospitals, offering comfort to wounded soldiers, reflecting his deep compassion. Lincoln’s leadership was displayed by his belief in humility and service, as he stated, “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” When leaders humbly serve, they break the spell over power by deflating pride and ego.

What is your plan to protect yourself from the unhealthy influence of power so you can love well? Here are some ideas to prayerfully consider. You can overcome the unhealthy influence of power by cultivating humility and remembering that leadership is about serving others, not dominating them. Servant leadership prioritizes people over personal gain. Regularly reflect on your motives: Are your decisions for the greater good or self-promotion? Share authority and responsibilities with those around you so they can grow and take ownership. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide your heart and mind through the truth of Scripture. Embrace servant leadership (Matthew 20:26-28), as modeled by Jesus, who washed His disciples’ feet. Loving well means listening, valuing others’ needs, and acting with integrity. When leaders reject the lure of power and focus on serving, they create an environment of trust and unity where love thrives.

A leader’s commitment to honesty is a second indicator of being able to love well. George Washington highly valued honesty. Washington’s leadership was marked by personal sacrifice and dedication to his troops during the American Revolutionary War. He endured the same hardships as his soldiers, notably during the harsh winter at Valley Forge, where he shared in their suffering to boost morale and unity. His humility and willingness to relinquish power after two presidential terms further demonstrated his prioritization of the nation’s well-being over personal ambition. Washington once stated, “I hope I shall possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man.” Honesty was truly our founding father’s best policy. Leaders who love well tell the truth.

How do you keep honesty and integrity a priority in your leadership? You maintain integrity and honesty by committing to transparency and accountability in every decision. Integrity starts with aligning words and actions—doing what you say you will do. Set clear values and ensure your decisions reflect them consistently. Surround yourself with advisors unafraid to speak the truth, offering constructive feedback when needed—free to ask, “Are you sure?” Stay humble and admit mistakes, showing your team that honesty matters more than perfection. Make time for self-reflection and prayer, asking God for wisdom and guidance (Proverbs 11:3). When you prioritize integrity and honesty, you build trust, inspire confidence, and create a culture of authenticity and respect. Leaders who love well are real and relatable to those they serve.

Prayer

Lord, help me lead with love, selflessly serving others and putting their needs above my own. Teach me humility, kindness, and integrity so my leadership reflects Your grace and compassion. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Application

Consider asking those you lead what makes them feel loved.
