“Trying to boss God around will steal your peace.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – August 21, 2022
I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted. Job 42:2
One of my friends once called me to discuss a big decision she and her husband needed to make. She laid out the pros and cons, telling me about her concerns and what she thought should happen. She also asked for prayer.
I suggested that she let her husband make this important decision. “Right,” she said. “That’s exactly it—I want you to pray that God will help my husband make the right choice.”
When I hung up, I reflected on the blessed gift of rest that women receive when they let their man “drive.” When other women are fretting and having anxiety attacks because they want to make sure everything’s perfect, the woman who trusts her man can rest, because she knows he has everything under control.
In the same way, when you let God “drive” because you choose to trust Him, even when you fear not getting something just the way you want it, a natural rest will occur.
Imagine a woman who’s trying to wrestle the driver’s wheel away from her husband. Now imagine a woman who’s sitting in the passenger seat, allowing her husband to drive without complaining or correcting. Which one do you think is experiencing rest? The one who trusts and is sitting in the passenger’s seat, of course.
She’s enjoying the scenery. She’s not fretting about how her husband will get her where she needs to go. She’s just relaxing and resting while sipping on her frozen mocha. The other woman doesn’t have time to enjoy a thing, because she’s too busy trying to be in control. If she would choose to trust, she could rest too.
If you are a woman—or a man—which kind of person do you want to be? Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28) but if you’re trying to boss Him around and make Him in our own image, you’ll be too busy giving Him orders to give Him your burdens. Therefore, you’ll forfeit the rest He promises.
“[I declare] the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose’” (Isaiah 46:10).
Prayer
Lord, I choose to trust you today. When I can’t control outcomes in my life, I know that you are sovereignly in control, guiding and directing me. And you always do what is absolutely best for me. Thank you, Lord. Amen.
Application
