“For Christians, living ‘on brand’ means acting in a way that reflects Jesus Christ’s teachings and character.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – January 27, 2025
A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. John 13:34-35
As an energetic middle schooler, I was drawn to one particular household several blocks from my home. At first, I thought it was easy access to their ping pong table (none of my other friends had such a luxury!). But there was more than my desire to compete in a fun game. A deeper draw than play—was at play. It was how this family of four interacted with one another. “I am proud of you. How can I help you? Let’s do that together.” Words that built up, reminding each of them of their unique gift to their family and how special they were. Fortuitously, as a young man, I was experiencing a close-knit family’s love for one another. Fast forward seven years, when I asked Rita’s dad if I could date her, “Only if you attend church with us.” Then, I discovered the “why” behind their love. They loved each other because they were loved by God, and they loved God.
What does it mean to live on brand as a follower of Jesus Christ? To be “on brand” means to act, communicate, or present yourself in a way that aligns with a specific identity, mission, or values, ensuring consistency and authenticity. While often used in marketing, it applies personally and spiritually as well. For Christians, living “on brand” means acting in a way that reflects Jesus Christ’s teachings and character. It involves embodying love, humility, grace, and truth in alignment with the Gospel. Just as a brand’s actions consistently point to its core message, a Christian’s life should consistently point to Christ, making their faith recognizable through actions, words, and attitudes that glorify God and align with His purpose. Love lives on brand.
Jesus commands His disciples to love one another as He loved them, stating that this love is how the world will recognize His followers. It’s not just about words but about active, selfless love that mirrors Christ’s sacrificial care for others. When you forgive, serve, and show kindness, you reflect Jesus’ character. Love is the foundation of the Gospel message, and living it out sets you apart in a world often marked by division and self-interest. A life of love glorifies God and draws others to Him, fulfilling your purpose as His ambassador on earth. Obedience lives out love.
Most of all, make sure you are loved well by the Lord so you can love well for the Lord. 1 John 4:19 is a clear reminder, “We love because he first loved us.” Mother Teresa famously stated, “We have been created for greater things—to love and be loved.” What are some ways to ensure you are being loved well? Being loved well by the Lord isn’t something you earn; it’s something you receive and recognize. God’s love is constant and unchanging, but sometimes, we miss it in the busyness of life. Regularly sit still and listen for the Spirit’s still, small voice. Romans 8:38-39 reminds you that nothing can separate you from His love. Surround yourself with committed believers who encourage and reflect God’s love. Pay attention to how your Father provides, comforts, and guides you—tangible expressions of His care. Be open to His discipline, knowing it’s rooted in love to help you grow. God loves you deeply, so take time to intimately experience His love for you. Living on brand is being loved well by the Lord and loving well for the Lord!
