Love Builds Up

Written by Boyd Bailey

Love is on the lookout to build up another with lifegiving words and deeds.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – February 19, 2025

This “knowledge” puffs up, but love builds up. 1 Corinthians 8:1

Love is looking to build up another with life-giving words and deeds. As a follower of Jesus Christ, consider yourself an architect of love. You are an instrument of the Holy Spirit to influence and construct those around you into a life of abundance in Christ. The forces of everyday life erode people’s courage with a constant rain of pain that can cause them to drift away alone and afraid. Sometimes, as a spiritual EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) to bring calm to chaos or as a relational tow truck to pull another out of the ditch of discouragement, your love builds up another when he or she feels beat down. Love builds up so others don’t give up!

To be an effective builder of love, watching for and avoiding ways people feel beaten down is wise. Life can be unfair and unbearable. Sometimes, people feel beaten down by the weight of it all. Criticism—especially when constant or harsh—can chip away at someone’s confidence. Feeling unappreciated, whether at work, in relationships, or at home, leaves people discouraged, wondering if their efforts matter. Unmet expectations or failures can also drain hope, making it hard to keep going. Add comparisons through social media or real-life interactions, and it’s easy to feel inadequate. Discouragement often comes when people feel unseen, unsupported, or their struggles don’t matter. Challenges like financial stress, health issues, or relational conflicts pile on, leaving people overwhelmed. Plenty of candidates in your circle of influence need your intentional life of loving words and deeds.

So, what are some meaningful ways for your love to engage in building up another life in Christ? Encouragement can strengthen someone’s spirit. A simple, heartfelt compliment or recognition of their efforts can inspire confidence and help them persevere through challenges. Acts of service demonstrate care and support. Whether helping with a task or being present in difficult times, your love in action shows they’re not alone. Listening attentively validates their feelings and creates a safe space for connection. You show they are valued by focusing on their words without distractions or interruptions. Love that encourages, serves, and listens builds trust, nurtures faith, and reminds others of their worth, reflecting God’s love in a tangible and transformative way. Beautifully, love builds up when you invest time and resources in others.

When you focus on building others up in love, something amazing happens—you’re built up in the process. Encouraging someone else strengthens your sense of purpose and joy. Acts of love, like serving or offering kind words, remind you of God’s love flowing through you. It’s fulfilling to see others grow and thrive because of your support. Love also develops deeper connections, creating a positive cycle of mutual encouragement. Your faith and character grow as you invest in others, reflecting the Lord’s example of selfless love. Building others up teaches humility and gratitude, enriching your spiritual life. In giving love, you receive blessings—joy, peace, and the assurance that you’re living out God’s purpose for His glory.

Prayer

Lord, help me to love others in ways that build them up. Teach me to encourage, serve, and uplift with kindness, reflecting Your love and bringing hope and strength to their lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
