Loving the Least of These

Written by Boyd Bailey

Loving the least of these is loving the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – February 28, 2025

And the King will say, “I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!” Matthew 25:40

Who are the least of these? Societies marginalized are those who can feel like outcasts in an upward-mobile world. They are the malnourished, imprisoned, homeless, sick, or strangers. The poor and needy are in desperate need. Jesus illustrates that caring for the least of these is the same as caring for Himself. How is this the same as caring for Jesus? It means we see Jesus in others, those created in God’s image. When we extend compassion and care to those in need, we essentially serve Christ Himself. This way of thinking invites us to see the divine image in every person, especially those suffering. Loving the least of these is loving the Lord Jesus Christ.

God’s heart breaks for the downtrodden. Throughout Scripture, we see His deep concern for those who are struggling—whether it’s the orphan, the widow, or the stranger. He calls His beloved to step in and care for them, reminding us that when we serve others, we’re serving Him. Proverbs 19:17 says, “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord.” That means our acts of compassion matter to the Lord. He’s not distant from their pain; He’s right there with them. And He invites us to be His hands and feet, showing His love in practical ways. Whether it’s through kindness, generosity, or simply being present, we reflect God’s heart when we care for others.

Jesus uses the imagery of a King to remind us that we are accountable to Him. Ultimately, the righteous will be separated from the unrighteous at the last judgment. He specifically calls out how we care for the poor and vulnerable as an indicator of our love for the Lord and is a criterion for judging us. Kings care for their subjects, and His citizens are loyal to serve their King. The Kingdom of God values compassion, justice, and service; those who follow Him must embody these values. When we care for the least of these, we align ourselves with the heart of our Lord, who reigns with mercy and grace. Subjects of King Jesus not only have a moral obligation to serve the marginalized, but service is also an act of love and loyalty to our Lord. We honor Him.

Loving, serving, and caring for the least of these is all about showing Christ’s love in practical ways. It starts with seeing people—really noticing those who are struggling around you. Maybe it’s a neighbor who needs a kind word, a co-worker going through a tough time, or a stranger needing a warm meal. Small acts of kindness can make a big difference. Serving can be as simple as volunteering at a shelter, donating what you don’t need, or offering your time to listen to someone who feels invisible. Caring means going beyond charity; it’s building relationships, treating people with dignity, and showing compassion without judgment. See Jesus when you are serving the poor and needy. Whether it’s through your resources, your time, or just being present, every act of love reflects God’s heart. So, look for ways to be the hands and feet of Jesus daily.

Prayer

Lord, help me to see and love the least of these as You do. Teach me to serve with compassion, humility, and joy, reflecting Your heart in every action. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
