Make Prayer Your Defense

Written by Boyd Bailey

Prayer softens our hearts.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – April 4, 2025

But I give myself to prayer. Psalm 109:4

David encountered numerous moments when he could have fought back, defended himself, or sought revenge. However, instead of taking matters into his own hands, he often turned to prayer as his defense, trusting God to handle the situation. One powerful illustration appears in Psalm 109, where David faces false accusations and betrayal. Rather than retaliating, he simply states, “But I give myself to prayer” (vs 4). David recognized that true justice comes from God, not human effort. Throughout his life—whether in battle, betrayal, or personal trials—David consistently made prayer his weapon and defense. Instead of fighting with his own strength, he sought God’s intervention, knowing that divine justice and protection far exceeded anything he could achieve independently. His example reminds us to pause, pray, and trust that God sees all circumstances and will act according to His perfect timing and wisdom.

Charles Spurgeon reflects on David’s heart, “Lying tongues were busy against the reputation of David, but he did not defend himself; he moved the case into a higher court, and pleaded before the great King himself.” What a great reminder to seek the Lord, not reason with man, when my insecurities sometimes make me feel as if I need to defend myself. “They don’t understand. If they truly knew me, they would think differently. That’s not true. I feel the urge to write a lengthy explanation.” But when I resist reacting out of fear, shame, or anger and instead pray for the Lord or one of His beloved to be my defender, I am released from an unhealthy desire for everyone’s approval. Prayer is the best defense because it relies on the Initiator of outcomes.

When you feel the urge to defend yourself, place your trust in God as your defender; it transforms both the situation and your heart. Remember when that coworker questioned your integrity in front of others? Your instinct was to list all your accomplishments and prove them wrong. Instead, you prayed for patience and kept working with excellence. Months later, your supervisor recognized your contributions without you saying a word. Then there was that misunderstanding with your longtime friend. They accused you of something you never intended. Rather than sending lengthy text explanations, you entrusted it to God and gave them space. The relationship healed naturally when they came to see the truth on their own. And when family criticized your life choices? You wanted to justify every decision. Instead, you trusted God’s guidance. Time revealed the wisdom in your path better than any argument could have.

When we face criticism or misunderstanding, we often defend ourselves right away—explain, justify, or even retaliate. However, prayer provides something better. It gives us the space to process our emotions before we respond. It allows us to step back from the sting of criticism and gain perspective. Is there truth we need to acknowledge? Or is this something we should release? In prayer, we are reminded that others’ opinions do not define our identity and worth. We can share our hurt feelings with God, who understands the entire situation—including our blind spots and the critic’s motivations. Prayer softens our hearts. Instead of becoming defensive, we may discover compassion for the person who misunderstood us. Sometimes, the most helpful response isn’t a witty comeback but the peace that arises from entrusting our reputation to God.

Prayer

Lord, when I feel attacked or misunderstood, help me turn to You first instead of defending myself. Be my shield and let Your peace guard my heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
