Prepare for Your Future Calling

Written by Shana Schutte

Choose to act in unbelief rather than not act out of unbelief.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – November 2, 2021

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might. . . Ecclesiastes 9:10

I’ve got dreams I would like to accomplish that I pray would be a blessing to others and glorify God. When I think about these dreams, they seem as if they are far off; that they will happen one day, but not yet.

When the fulfillment of a dream feels far away, it can be easy to act as if it is far off, and not act in accordance with the role we will have in the future. For example, imagine a young man wants to be a concert pianist. Every day he dreams about being a concert pianist, he prays about being a concert pianist, and he is very excited about playing before thousands.

But because his dream seems so far off, he doesn’t always act like the concert pianist he will become. Instead, he does other things. He wastes his time playing video games. He squanders moments when he could be learning to make beautiful music. Not that there is anything wrong with enjoying games, but if he wants to be a concert pianist in the future, he needs to act like one now.

God has callings for all our lives. In one season, it may be to become a mother; in another, it may be to become a business owner. And, prior to each of these seasons, there is often preparation. God does His part in making us ready internally and we need to cooperate with His preparation by practicing the role He will give us.

Every day is an opportunity to take small steps toward the fulfillment of our dreams and God’s calling for our lives—but unbelief and fear can keep you from moving forward. It can keep you from preparing. It can keep you from acting now. Choose to act anyway.

If you want to become a business owner, it may mean learning how to be a better manager of your time, so that when the opportunity arrives for you to have that business, you are ready.

It may mean that if you want to become an accomplished singer, that you practice and prepare each day for what will be.

It reminds me of Jesus’ words about wineskins. God cannot pour the wine of a new calling into us if we have not been prepared.

So, as you are praying for the Lord to fulfill a particular dream or calling, begin to act in alignment with the new role you will inherit when that dream is fulfilled. If the fulfillment of the dream would require you to have better relational skills, then practice those skills. If the fulfillment of that dream would require you to manage your money for God’s Kingdom in more responsible ways, do that too so that you are ready when God opens doors for you.

Preparing for a future calling is a way to put legs to our prayers. It’s a way we say we believe God can work through us as we move forward. Of course, we cannot manipulate Him. We are his workmanship. He is the Potter. We are the clay. But He did create us to create. He made us to do for Him. Seek Him in your dream. Begin to work it out as you take small steps. As you submit your plans to Him, He will guide you, empower you, and show you the way. All things are possible with Him (see Matthew 19:26).

Choose to act in unbelief rather than not act out of unbelief. I want to be ready for what could be. What about you?

“Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest” (Proverbs 6:6-8).

Prayer

Lord, life is exciting, and it’s pregnant with possibilities of what you can do through us as we trust you, seek you, and work for you. Help me to lean on you and listen to you as I move forward in the dreams I have in my heart. Help me to begin to prepare so I am ready. Amen.

Application

Write one step you can take toward your dream on a piece of notebook paper. Carry it with you or place it on your desk today where you can see it or refer to it often. Then take that step in courage.
