Prosperity’s Pull

Written by Boyd Bailey

Generosity flows naturally from a heart filled with gratitude.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – November 4, 2024

You did not serve the Lord your God joyfully and gladly in the time of prosperity. Deuteronomy 28:47

There is a pull earthly prosperity uses to influence me away from the Lord and easily competes with my focus on storing up heavenly treasures. More money in retirement. More stuff. More advancement at work to be more responsible and to be paid more. The more prosperous I feel, the more important I must be, right? Wrong. In his unique classic, The Screwtape Letters, C.S. Lewis describes how demons can use prosperity to distract humans from God: “Prosperity knits a man to the World. He feels that he is ‘finding his place in it’, while really it is finding its place in him. His increasing reputation, his widening circle of acquaintances, his sense of importance, the growing pressure of absorbing and agreeable work, build up in him a sense of being really at home in earth, which is just what we want.” Being too much at home on earth can miss having a home in heaven. Prosperity’s pull requires redefining prosperity and refocusing my priorities.

Prosperity in Christ isn’t measured by wealth, success, or material gain. Instead, it’s about the fullness of life found in an intimate relationship with Jesus. In Matthew 6:33, He reminds us, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Prosperity in God’s Kingdom means peace, purpose, and joy that the world cannot provide. It’s about having a heart that overflows with gratitude, no matter our circumstances. When we align ourselves with God’s will and prioritize His ways, we experience a richness that surpasses worldly understanding. True prosperity is living a life rooted in faith, love, and service, trusting that God will meet our needs as we walk with Him daily. Love’s pull prospers our souls!

So, how can we practically shift from an earthly investment mindset toward an eternal direction? Our affections influence what we are drawn to with our minds, will, and emotions. Focus on God with a grateful mindset shifts our perspective from what we need to get to how we can generously give. Generosity flows naturally from a heart filled with gratitude. When we, as Jesus’ followers, pause to reflect on God’s countless blessings—the daily provisions, the gift of salvation, the love poured out on us—we are moved to give. A grateful heart recognizes that everything comes from God, who provides abundantly. This mindset shifts focus from “what I have” to “what I can share.” As we experience God’s faithfulness, we are inspired to be faithful stewards of His gifts. The generosity that results from our gratitude isn’t about wealth or resources; it’s an outpouring of thanksgiving, a response to the lavish grace God so freely gives.

As Moses reminds God’s people in the opening verse, prosperity should be a conduit for serving the Lord with joy and gladness. In times of prosperity, it’s easy to become comfortable and self-focused, but God calls you to serve Him joyfully in all seasons. Remember that everything you have is a gift from His hand. You’ll find joy in giving back when you recognize the Lord as the source of your blessings. Use your influence and resources to bless others and further God’s kingdom. Serving with a glad heart reflects your gratitude for His goodness. Let your prosperity be a tool to lift up Jesus, bringing hope and encouragement to those around you. In doing so, you’ll experience true, lasting joy. Prosperity’s pull is severed through generous service to God.

Prayer

Lord, I thank You for the blessings You’ve given me. Help me to serve You with a joyful and grateful heart in times of abundance. May I use what I have to bless others, glorifying You in all I do. Let my prosperity reflect Your goodness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Application
