Raised Hands and a Broken Heart

Written by Pat Elsberry

Even if you feel you’re going to drown, God is right there for you. He’s whispering, “I’ve got you. I won’t let go. Just trust me.””

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – September 8, 2024

I trust in you, Lord; I say, “You are my God.” Psalm 31:14

Recently, I listened to a podcast by Lysa TerKeurst. The topic focused on broken trust, and I was struck by how she began to weave the story about how a broken trust can lead to grief. Grief, as we know, is not exclusive to the loss of a loved one. Our hearts can grieve for many reasons – the loss of a relationship, a job, or even our health. It’s a universal experience that we all share.

What resonated so deeply was this: Joy and sorrow can co-exist. We can have a broken heart and raised hands at the same time. This is a powerful reminder that even in our darkest moments, there is always the potential for joy to break through.

Yes! Hallelujah! This is such a true statement! Have you ever found yourself having a good day, smiling, and dare I say, laughing, when all of a sudden, in the next moment, you are in tears? It’s okay to have a broken heart and raised hands at the same time! This is all part of the griever’s heart and how we process whatever loss we’ve experienced.

Friends, we can trust God in the dark places, just as we can in the light. In fact, it’s even more important to place our trust in Him when we don’t understand where our lives are heading or why things have happened as they have.

Job tore at his clothes and shaved his head – all things they did in the Old Testament days to signify their grief. Let’s not miss the big thing here! Even though Job was grieving and did these extreme things, he still trusted God.

No matter what you’re walking through now – even if you feel you’re going to drown, God is right there for you. He’s whispering, “I’ve got you. I won’t let go. Just trust me.” This constant presence is a source of comfort and reassurance in the midst of our struggles.

Our scars, the marks of our grief and loss, become our beauty marks. Just as the scripture says in Isaiah 61:3, only God can make beauty from the ashes, a metaphor for turning our pain and suffering into something beautiful and meaningful. These ‘beauty marks’ are not physical, but they are the strength, resilience, and wisdom we gain from our experiences.

Finding our way out of the darkness grief causes takes a long time and significant work. I encourage you to hang on if you don’t see a glimmer of light right now. One day, you will see it. It may only start out as a little pinprick of soft light, but another day, it may be as bright as the sunshine overhead. There is always hope, even in the darkest of times.

“…Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.” Psalm 50:15

Prayer

Father, I am forever grateful you are not only the God during days of sunshine, but you are the God who walks through the dark places with me. You alone make the hard days easier and it’s within you I find hope and peace. I will forever raise my hands to you.

Application

Take a few minutes today to sit in a quiet place and raise your hands to the One who holds you.
