Security in Stability

Written by Boyd Bailey

The Lord promises I change not. So…rely on and rest secure in Him.”

I am the Lord, I change not. Malachi 3:6

The variables of life have a way of vexing our security and hijacking our stability. Gratefully, Jesus gives relational security, which provides much-needed life stability. Not stability in the sense of no challenges, but stability that rests on the solid foundation of Christ, who never, ever changes. The winds and rains of this world maliciously assault our faith, but only the superficial sand of a life tethered to trust in this world will be blown away. The solid foundational rock of reliance on God secures our house of faith to be able to weather life’s storms.

The Lord God is your stronghold in your day of trouble, He is your tower of trust to run into for peace and security. A refuge to retreat to and regroup with His healing touch and generous compassion. The changes and chances of our chaotic world are called to attention by the changelessness of Christ. Just as Jesus calmly stood in the boat to rebuke the storm, He stands with you in your storm. His fierce love faces all your fears and doubts with His calming presence and peace.

Obedience to Jesus Christ, especially in the middle of uncertainty, is God’s way of providing me with the certainty of His presence and the reliability of His faithfulness. Jesus explains that doing His word is the pathway to being secure and stable in the face of fierce headwinds. “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock” (Matthew 7:24-25).

When I begin to second-guess my decisions and wish I could go back and change my circumstances, I can begin to second-guess God. Fortunately, the sweet Holy Spirit reminds me that my obedience is the Lord’s way of slowing me down and focusing me back on His loving faithfulness. So, instead of straying away from God, fixated on fear and doubt, His love calls me back to His secure peace.

Charles Spurgeon, with gifted eloquence, depicts the faithful, unchanging God who loves us:

With God “is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” Whatever his attributes were of old, they are now; his power, his wisdom, his justice, his truth, are alike unchanged. He has ever been the refuge of his people, their stronghold in the day of trouble, and he is their sure Helper still. He is unchanged in his love. He has loved his people with “an everlasting love”; he loves them now as much as ever he did, and when all earthly things shall have melted in the last conflagration, his love will still wear the dew of its youth. Precious is the assurance that he changes not! The wheel of providence revolves, but its axle is eternal love.

As Spurgeon remarks, His love will still wear the dew of youth. Fresh. Vibrant. Engaging. The lively love of God spiritually infuses young and old saints with stamina of faith when the world around them staggers from exhaustion. The Lord promises I change not. So…rely on and rest secure in Him.

“You are the same, and your years have no end. The children of your servants shall dwell secure; their offspring shall be established before you” (Psalm 102:27-28).
