Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today- January 2, 2013
“Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” John 1:50
Jesus expects His followers to see greater things than they have already experienced. The life of Christ is full of greater graces that come with bolder faith and surrender to the Spirit’s control. Greater things could be children who surpass their parents by influencing the globe with the gospel. Access to the world may come in building orphanages, hospitals and schools—all in Jesus’ name. Thus, technology harnessed for the Kingdom sees greater things for God. Think big!
Our salvation is just the beginning of beginning to see things from the Lord’s perspective. Not only has Christ saved us from something (sin, hell, self), He has saved us for something (righteousness, heaven, Himself). We’re not to stay stuck in the infancy of our conversion, but move forward fashioned by the Holy Spirit’s plan. Our faith experience may surpass those who influenced our spiritual journey. The student sometimes sees greater things than the teacher.
“Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.” John 14:12
You may have served in the shadow of someone else, but the Lord is leading you to take a larger leadership role. He is moving you out of your comfort zone into His trust zone. Christ knows that for you to advance to the next level in your faith you need to position your life for His greater things. Perhaps He is calling you to a role in government to use your influence for Kingdom initiatives. Like Joseph, your political platform can be organized for the greater good of God’s greater things.
God’s greater things are what stretch you toward sacrificial service for His ideals. Are you coasting toward Christ or is your life gaining spiritual momentum with each step of faith? Remember what Jesus told you in your time of intimacy with Him: “Your are special. You are mine. I have greater things for you.” Therefore, take Him at His word. Engraft His word into your heart and seek His greater things: prayer, family Bible study, marketplace ministry and missions.
“What more can David say to you? For you know your servant, Sovereign Lord. For the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made it known to your servant.” 2 Samuel 7:20-21
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I want to wisely steward the greater things You have for me.
