“Greater things await a life of great love and obedience!”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – October 9, 2024
Jesus asked him, “Do you believe this just because I told you I had seen you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this. John 1:50, NLT
God has greater things for His children who genuinely desire to learn, grow, and become more like Jesus in their lives and work. Humility and honesty open a heart to God’s heart. Here is where the Holy Spirit does His best work, as He reveals the Lord’s ways in a way that cultivates intimacy and love by transforming the mind with truth and conforming the heart with grace. Becoming a guileless person means integrity positions you for intimacy. There is no pride and pretense, only humility and openness to the love of Jesus. God has greater things for those who seek their great God with a pure heart and serve without shame in His Kingdom. We discover more about the greater things of God in a conversation between Jesus and Nathaniel.
In John 1:46-51 there is an energizing encounter: Nathaniel, skeptical and raw, sitting under a fig tree, wrestling with the weight of life’s questions. Then, out of nowhere, Philip rushes in with a bold claim, “We’ve found Him! The one Moses wrote about—Jesus of Nazareth!” Nathanael’s eyebrows rise in disbelief, “Nazareth? Can anything good come from there?” Skepticism fills the air. But then Nathanael meets Him. Jesus looks into his soul with a knowing smile and says, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.” Nathaniel, stunned, asks, “How do you know me?” Jesus responds, “I saw you.” Jesus peered deep into Nathaniel’s heart, penetrating his soul. Because of Nathaniel’s open, honest heart, Jesus’ love connected to his deep desires.
Jesus sees you, too—in your questions, doubts, and hidden moments under the fig tree. And He invites you to come, follow, and see greater things. You begin to see Christ’s greater things just for you when you truly understand that He sees you, knows you, and loves you. Nathaniel would see greater things in Jesus’ transformative teachings and, eventually, the ultimate of His miracles, the resurrection of Jesus. No doubt there are greater things God wants to teach you as you submit and apply what you learn to your life and grow in Christlikeness. And the more you understand and experience being crucified with Christ, the more your heavenly Father raises you up to flourish in the fruit of the resurrected life. Greater things await a life of great love and obedience!
Jesus longs to show you greater things, just as He promised Nathaniel. When you come to Him with an honest and humble heart, He sees you. He knows your doubts, your struggles, and your hopes. This is precisely where He begins to work. God honors authenticity; He values your openness and willingness to seek truth, even in uncertainty. By staying humble and receptive to His voice, you open yourself to a deeper revelation of His love and power. Stay expectant. He wants to show you more—greater insights into His Word, greater peace in your heart, and greater strength in your faith. Trust Him with a heart ready to learn, and watch as He unfolds His greater purposes in your life. Greater things come to those with a greater love for God and others.
