Shoulder-to-Shoulder

Written by Pat Elsberry

Standing shoulder-to-shoulder means we trust our fellow Christ followers to walk with Jesus and stand alongside us.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – February 11, 2024

For though I am away from you in body, yet I am with you in spirit, delighted at the sight of your [standing shoulder to shoulder in such] orderly array and the firmness and the solid front and steadfastness of your faith in Christ [that leaning of the entire human personality on Him in absolute trust and confidence in His power, wisdom, and goodness]. Colossians 2:5, AMPC

Interestingly, in times of war, men would stand shoulder to shoulder, lining up to fight the enemy and to maintain unit cohesion. By coming together, they could better defeat their foes.

I’ve been blessed to be part of an incredible women’s ministry called Touching Hearts. Within the ministry, there are multiple small groups of eight to ten women who meet monthly. The groups are called Shoulder-2-Shoulder (S2S). These amazing women do this every day — they stand shoulder-to-shoulder in the gap for their families, friends, cities, churches, and country.

Women all over the city meet to provide support in any way possible. We lift each other up and give a general sense of love and care. As we gather together, the Holy Spirit moves mightily, as we stop and pray for one another’s specific needs. These are warrior women who don’t mess around!

“I also tell you this—if two of you agree down here on earth concerning anything you ask for, my Father in heaven will do it for you. For where two or three gather together because they are mine, I will be right there among them” (Matthew 18:19-20, TLB).

Our shoulders are often seen as a symbol of support and strength in many spiritual societies. They represent the ability to carry the weight of life’s challenges and responsibilities. In this context, strong shoulders symbolize resilience and the capacity to withstand adversity.

There is power in prayer and power in the coming together of the saints. Although I’m an extrovert with an introvert’s heart, I am so moved and energized by the Holy Spirit and how He moves among us. I encourage you to connect with a friend — even if it’s just one — but someone you can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with. Someone you can rely on, trust, and know will be there to help you up if you’ve fallen.

If you’re walking through a difficult time right now, know you are not alone. We are meant to be a support for one another in this life. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder means we trust our fellow Christ followers to walk with Jesus and stand alongside us, even providing protection through prayer and support when we stand against the Enemy.

So that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth” (Philippians 2:10).

Prayer

Jesus, thank you that you are the great I Am, and you will stand alongside us no matter what battles we face. We can be confident of this very thing and know we are never alone with you by our side.

Application
