“God’s goodness is not meant to be some foggy memory, but a real-time reminder of what He has done for you—is doing for you—and will do for you.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – March 16, 2022
And I will make them and the places round about my hill a blessing; and I will cause the shower to come down in his season; there shall be showers of blessing. Ezekiel 34:26
As I write these words, the view out my library window is dark in the calmness of predawn, but I can hear the splatter of rain on the rock walkway just a few feet away. Refreshing rain showers that grow our luscious green grass, cause our varietal of flowers to bloom brilliant pinks, yellows, whites and reds while the same time replenishing the reservoir of water deep underground that fills to capacity the well water on our property. Showers bring life to all living creatures it moistens. Humility and wisdom celebrate the headwaters of refreshing blessings that originate from above.
The Old Testament prophet Ezekiel reminds the Lord’s people of rain’s infinite source—Almighty God brings down the showers of blessing. Not drops. But a deluge of good things. The man of God goes on to explain the seasonality of His blessing. Like a parched heart in a spiritual arid season looking for just a drop of love for much needed relief. For weary souls suffering through a season of pain, our suffering savior Jesus rains down His blessings of comfort and healing. Blessings may feel like buckets or thimbles of water based on your spiritual season. Either way, stay faithful to do the next right thing and glean lessons inaccessible in better times.
“Sing a song from a grateful heart; sing and never forget all the good He has done” (Psalm 103:2, The Voice).
The impact of God’s goodness is not meant to be a foggy memory, but a real-time reminder of what He has done for you—is doing for you—and will do for you. The Lord’s showers of blessing are seasonal, leaving behind gratitude’s residue. Like a chorus of birds celebrating warmer weather, your soul cannot stay silent with the memories of Jesus flooding your heart with His love and forgiveness. You shout halleluiah when the Holy Spirit brings to mind a song that soothed your soul in that special moment. Or, in awe and wonder you declare the majesty of your Maker when you revel in His vast creation. Blessings erupt a heart in praise and gratitude.
I love these eloquent, timeless words from the 19th century English preacher, Charles Spurgeon: “All God’s blessings go together, like links in a golden chain. If he gives converting grace, he will also give comforting grace. He will send “showers of blessing.” Look up today, O parched plant, and open thy leaves and flowers for a heavenly watering”.
Is your soul in a season of leanness or plenty? Either way thank the Lord in all occasions for His blessings. Recall them. Count them. Share them. Blessings are not meant to be locked away but given away. To the degree you have been blessed, so bless others. Be a blessing with your smile. Be a blessing with your energy directed to serving, not being served. Be a blessing with your stuff. Don’t pray, “Lord how much should I give, instead pray boldly, Lord how much should I keep?” Blessings locked up in forgotten memories vanish for lack of thanksgiving, but blessings kept top of mind feed a grateful heart. Look for God’s showers—then start dancing in the rain!
“Rejoice always pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).
Prayer
Heavenly Father, how can I count the many ways you have blessed me? Thank you, thank you, thank you, through Christ’s love and in Jesus’ name, amen.
Application
What blessings have I been given that I need to share with another?
