“In moments of being with Jesus your being becomes more like Jesus.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – May 21, 2021
So he went indoors to stay with them. Then it happened! While he was sitting at table with them he took the loaf, gave thanks, broke it and passed it to them. Their eyes opened wide and they knew him! But he vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, “Weren’t our hearts glowing while he was with us on the road, and when he made the scriptures so plain to us?” Luke 24:30-32, Phillips
As empty nesters, my wife Rita and I, have a routine at the dinner table to discuss the day. We use a standard script, what was your high today, what was your low, what was your interesting? We don’t always stick to the script but it has become a helpful primer for conversation. Sitting with Rita allows me slow down, sit down, shut up and speak up. My listening grows more intent as I make eye contact, as my heart and mind engage. With our phones away in “time out” we have quality, uninterrupted time to meaningfully connect. Sitting together brings us together.
Such was the situation with the two followers of Jesus, once reaching their destination they invited their new friend, though still a stranger, to sit with them over a meal. As they sat down for dinner, it happened! Their eyes of faith opened, as the seeds of Scripture Jesus had sown in their hearts along their walk began to take root in their hearts and bore the fruit of belief. Jesus broke the bread and their spiritual blindness was broken—they could see their Savior and Lord. Alive and real He offered His beloved physical and spiritual nourishment. Sitting with Jesus, reveals Jesus!
“And they got to their feet without delay and turned back to Jerusalem. There they found the eleven and their friends all together, full of the news—“The Lord is really risen—he has appeared to Simon now!” Then they told the story of their walk, and how they recognized him when he broke the loaf” (Luke 24:33-35, Phillips).
Do you invest dedicated blocks of time to sit with your Savior Jesus? It’s in these moments of being with Jesus that your being becomes more like Jesus. Here in this sacred space, He breaks the bread of life—Himself—so He can reveal Himself to you. His love. His sacrifice. His forgiveness. All of who He is, He generously offers to you. Are you looking for God’s gifts with eyes of faith, or still obsessing over why certain expectations have not been met your way? Jesus opens eyes of faith to see Him, as you humble your heart to seek Him. Love sits often with Jesus.
Sitting with Jesus clarifies your thinking and emboldens your faith. It may be a brief moment, preceded by heart preparation in the Scripture or it may be an extended time of a loving, intimate encounter. Any time with the Lord has a 100% guaranteed return on investment. Like the two doubting disciples who remained in the presence of Jesus, though not seeing Jesus, their faithfulness was rewarded with renewed faith. When you sit with Jesus, you are motivated to rise up and rush to love others in His name. Walking, talking and sitting with Jesus births boldness. Just as you take time to enjoy a nice dinner with someone you love, sit and share with your Lord!
“While I meditated, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue: “Show me, Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is” (Psalm 39:3-4).
