“Whether we are facing trials or simply navigating life’s uncertainties, music can minister to us in ways that words alone cannot.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – March 16, 2025
Let me remember my song in the night; let me meditate in my heart. Psalm 77:6, ESV
Over the course of my walk with the Lord, He often speaks to me through music. Often times the Holy Spirit will awaken me in the middle of night with words from a song. When this first began to happen, I thought it was so odd and didn’t dare speak of it to anyone in case they thought I was losing it. As the years have gone by, I not only have taken comfort when this happens, but I’ve come to learn this is more common than I imagined. In fact, the Bible even speaks of it. Job 35:10 captures this well, as Job’s friend Elihu asks, “Where is God my maker? He gives me songs in the night.” Then in Psalm 42:8, “By day the Lord directs his love, by night his song is with me.” These verses remind me of God’s intimate care, showing that even in the darkest times, He provides comfort through music.
Music has a unique way of reaching deep into our hearts, especially when we’re seeking clarity and peace. Whether we are facing trials or simply navigating life’s uncertainties, music can minister to us in ways that words alone cannot. Worship songs, hymns, or even instrumental melodies can speak to our spirits, helping to lift burdens and bring a sense of God’s presence into our lives.
In moments when we feel distant from God, music can act as a bridge, reconnecting us with Him. A well-placed song can remind us of God’s love, faithfulness, and the promises He has made. Sometimes, the answers we are looking for aren’t immediate solutions to our problems but rather a deeper understanding that God is with us, working in ways we cannot yet see. Music helps us access that awareness, drawing us into worship even in our waiting. When the Holy Spirit has given me a song in the night, later, as I listen to it in its entirety, it has provided comfort, direction and encouragement. God is so good to speak to us in this way.
There’s a reason why the Bible often speaks of singing and making music to God. Psalms is filled with verses that encourage us to sing praises, even in distress. Music can calm our anxious minds, helping us focus on God’s character rather than our circumstances. It also provides an avenue to express emotions we can’t articulate in prayer. As we sing, we release our concerns and embrace faith, trusting that God is working behind the scenes.
Ultimately, God gives us songs in the night as a way to minister to our souls. These melodies remind us that even in times of silence, God is present, and His peace is available. When words fail, music carries us through, allowing us to rest in His love and care while we wait for the answers He will surely provide.
“He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him” (Psalm 40:3).
