“In trust, there is peace and rest.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – December 13, 2022
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8-9
Worry is an interesting thing. Have you noticed how it can creep up on you and become a habitual way of thinking without even realizing it?
This week I realized how much I worry or concern myself with things I simply cannot control: the economy, other people’s opinions, or what will happen next year or five years from now in my life or the lives of my loved ones. Then I realized that most of the things I silently fret over that create anxiety are out of my control. Therefore, they are none of my business. They are God’s business.
I shared this insight with my husband which brought to mind a dream I have had for close to a decade. I’d like to build a small retreat center consisting of a few cabins where hurting people can come to the mountains to receive spiritual direction and to be restored without cost.
My idea has always been that my husband and I would earn the money for this endeavor through our work to make this dream a reality. But I am not sure that will happen. I’m not sure what God has planned.
“Whether my business prospers or not is none of my business. Ultimately, it’s God’s business. My business is to do the best I can where I am right now and honor the Lord in the work He has given me to do today and to love people well through it. The rest is up to him.”
When I spoke these words, my concern about what will happen in the future immediately disappeared and trust took its place.
The next day, I became concerned over the future of our nation and the world, as I often am. Ultimately, I cannot control the future of the world. That’s God’s business. Certainly, along with other believers, I can pray. I can be a light. But the future of mankind is God’s business.
Over the next few days, as I started to worry over things I couldn’t control, I shouted, “Lord! That’s none of my business! That’s your business!” And immediately, trust and peace always took the place of worry because in trust, there is peace and rest.
Certainly, living can be filled with challenges. No doubt, there is a lot we can worry about. But, Christ invites us into rest and comfort for our weary souls by understanding and acknowledging what He controls and what we cannot control. In this there is deliverance from the strain of worry even as we pray.
Are you worried today? Ask the Lord to show you what you can control and what you can’t. Then when worry comes knocking, give a big shout, “Lord, that’s none of my business! That’s your business!”
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life” (Matthew 6:25-34)?
Prayer
Lord, I trust you and I lay down worries about things that I cannot control. The future is in your hands. The world is in your hands. My country is in your hands. My very life is in your hands. I trust you because it’s all your business! Amen.
Application
Be mindful today of your worries and tell the Lord, “That’s not my business! That’s your business!”
