“There is no one with sweeter, more compassionate, or healing words than Christ.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – September 12, 2023
There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Proverbs 12:18
A couple of months ago after I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, my husband, Clark, and I chose to pursue treatment at a world-renowned cancer center in Mexico called Oasis of Hope.
The first morning after we arrived, Clark and I went to breakfast in the dining hall. Moments after we were seated, a middle-aged, frail woman shuffled by our table. I could only see her back as I turned to say hi.
“Ma’am,” I said. “Hello. What’s your name?”
She turned to face me. There was pain in her eyes. She was holding her stomach, which was distended.
“Irena,” she whispered. When I saw her pain, I was moved to ask, “Can I pray for you?” She whimpered, nodded yes, and moved toward me. I was seated and she was standing. I put my left hand on her belly and beseeched Jesus to heal her. I cried and she did too.
After I finished praying, she didn’t speak but before shuffling away, she kissed the top of my head. As she walked away, one of the other patients told me that she is from Russia and doesn’t speak English.
Within minutes, I thought about Jesus. I thought about how if I, a mere human, was moved to compassion due to a glance of pain from a stranger, how much more was the Son of God moved with ultimate love and compassion for those He created when He healed the multitudes?
This morning as I reflected on this experience, I also thought about Proverbs 16:24 which says, “Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” And there is no one with sweeter, more gracious or healing words than Christ! How kind He is! How amazing His love! How beautiful His goodness! How powerful His healing!
Please pray for total healing for Irena and that she will hear the sweet, healing voice of Christ!
“For I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you” (Isaiah 41:13).
Prayer
Lord, help me to notice those who are around me with your compassionate eyes. Help me not to overlook those who are in my presence who you want to touch through me. Amen.
Application
Hold someone’s hand and pray for them today. And, while you pray, think about the sweet words and compassion of Christ.
