“The fruit of selfless love in your life validates that you truly know God.”
Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – June 21, 2024
Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 1 John 4:8, ESV
At the heart of the Christian faith lies a transforming truth: God is love. This foundational reality shapes our understanding of who God is and how we are called to live in a relationship with Him and others. As we delve deeper into the infinite depths of God’s love, we discover its transformative power and the abundant fruit it produces in our lives.
To know God as love is to encounter the very essence of His being. His love is not merely an attribute or characteristic but the very core of His nature. It is eternal, unconditional, and unfathomable—a love that surpasses human comprehension. As we open our hearts to receive this love, we are invited into a profound relationship with the Creator of the universe, who delights in showering us with His extravagant love.
The knowledge of God’s love has the power to transform our lives from the inside out. It dispels fear, insecurity, and doubt, replacing them with confidence, peace, and assurance. As we meditate on the depth of God’s love revealed in Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross, we are overwhelmed by the magnitude of His grace and mercy. This awareness of God’s love births within us a desire to love Him in return and to love others as He has loved us.
The apostle Paul describes the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23, listing love as the first and preeminent fruit. This is no coincidence, for love is the defining characteristic of a life surrendered to God. Love is the foyer that leads into the home of your abundant life. As we abide in His love, His Spirit produces within us a harvest of love—a love that is patient, kind, selfless, and enduring. This love transcends human limitations and extends to all people, regardless of race, gender, or status. Jesus declared that the greatest commandments are to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength and to love our neighbor as ourselves (Mark 12:30-31). As we grow in our understanding of God’s love, we are empowered to love sacrificially, extravagantly, and unconditionally—imitating the selfless love demonstrated by Christ.
As you experience knowing God, love compels you to share His love with others. Just as a tree bears fruit for the nourishment of others, so too are you called to bear the fruit of love for the blessing of those around you. Whether through acts of kindness, words of encouragement, or gestures of compassion, you become conduits of God’s love, shining His light into a dark and broken world. The fruit of selfless love in your life validates that you truly know God. Intimacy with the Almighty means you allow Him to first know and love you so you can then know and love Him.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for revealing Yourself as love. Help me bear the fruit of this knowledge—love that reflects Your character. May my life overflow with compassion, kindness, and selflessness, drawing others to experience Your transformative love. In every word and deed, let Your love shine brightly. Amen.
Application
What experiences with God compel you to love others? How can you elevate the importance of these experiences of knowing God in this manner?
