The Gift of Presence

Written by Shana Schutte

Jesus values relationship over activity.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – August 27, 2024

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.  Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Philippians 2:3-4

In a world that prizes productivity and achievement and in which we are so easily distracted with memes, reels, Facebook and news, it’s easy to forget the impact of simply “being there” for others.

The gift of presence is one of the most valuable things we can offer to those around us to make them feel seen, heard, and loved. When we think about giving something important to others, we might focus on material things or how we can help with tasks. But sometimes, what people need most isn’t something we can give them, but someone who can be with them . . . someone to sit with them in their joy or sorrow, someone to share in the moment.

One of my sons in law is a stellar example of the gift of presence. When you are with him, his words are thoughtful and unhurried. He looks you in the eye and has a sense about him that says, “I want to focus on you” even if he doesn’t have tons of time and needs to get back to work in a short time. His presence is calming, and his demeanor is warm. He gives you his undivided attention. He lingers with you. Because of these things, I always feel that he cares.

Jesus was the perfect example of the gift of presence throughout His ministry. Though He performed miracles and taught with great wisdom, one of the most powerful aspects of His life was the way He was fully present with those around Him. He wasn’t in a hurry. He noticed people and He fully engaged in their stories.

Remember the story of Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38-42? While Martha was busy gettin’ things done, Mary chose to sit at Jesus’ feet, listening to Him. When Martha complained, Jesus gently reminded her that Mary had chosen what was better—His presence. Jesus valued relationship over activity.

Can I invite you to read that last sentence again? Jesus valued relationship over activity. I don’t know about you, but when I consider this phrase, I am challenged to make people a priority.

In our daily lives, we have numerous opportunities to give the gift of presence to others. Whether it’s sitting quietly with a friend who is grieving, listening attentively to someone who needs to talk, or simply spending time with family without distractions, our presence speaks volumes. It tells others that they are valued, that their feelings and experiences matter, and that they are not alone.

But to give others the gift of presence, we need to make space in our lives. That means not rushing here to there with our heads down. It means not only having our minds full of our own needs and our to-do lists. And, it means taking time to look up and consider who is around us or is asking for our attention. Finally, it means first spending time with Jesus who can give us His peace, so we can in turn, give it to others. Sometimes it’s just all about being there.

“For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you” (John 13:15).

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of Your presence in my life. Help me to be fully present with those around me and help me to reflect your love and care. Teach me to value the moments I spend with others, and to give them the gift of my undivided attention. I pray that my presence will be a reflection of promise to always be with us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Application

This week, think of someone who might need your presence—whether they are going through a difficult time or simply could use a companion. Reach out to them, not with an agenda or plan, but just to be there. Watch how God uses your presence to bring comfort and connection.
