The Oxygen of Hope

Written by Pat Elsberry

Without hope, we are lost—but with Jesus, we have a hope that never fails.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – March 9, 2025

But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31

Did you know that we can survive without food for about 30 days? A healthy adult can even survive without water for approximately 3 – 5 days. But living without hope is impossible. Hope is our oxygen. It’s the fuel that keeps us going when times are tough, giving us the strength to press on through challenges and the vision to dream of better days. It’s more than just wishful thinking—it’s the belief that tomorrow can be better than today, no matter how difficult our circumstances may be.

When hope fades, so does our sense of purpose. We can endure almost any trial if we have hope. It’s what motivates us to seek solutions when we’re faced with problems, to rebuild when things fall apart, and to carry on even when we feel like giving up. Hope provides the light we need when everything around us seems dark.

But where do we find this hope that sustains us? Hope has a name and his name is Jesus. Many people place their hope in temporary things—wealth, success, or even relationships. While these can bring happiness for a time, they are fleeting and fragile. When our hope is rooted in things that can be taken away or destroyed, it leaves us vulnerable. This is why the ultimate source of hope must be something eternal, unshakeable, and unfailing. For Christians, this ultimate hope is found in Jesus Christ.

Jesus offers a hope that transcends our present circumstances. In Him, we find not just the promise of a better future, but the assurance of eternal life. His love is constant, His promises are sure, and His power is unlimited. No matter what we face—suffering, loss, or uncertainty—Jesus is our steadfast hope. He is the anchor for our souls, keeping us secure in the midst of life’s storms.

In a world where everything seems uncertain, the hope we have in Jesus is what sustains us. It reminds us that we are never alone, our lives have purpose, and there is a future filled with hope and joy waiting for us. Without hope, we are lost—but with Jesus, we have a hope that never fails.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope” (Romans 15:13).
