The Power of Truth Anchors

Written by Shana Schutte

Truth Anchors help us turn our gaze, even in the heat of the battle, away from Satan’s negative, soul-sucking lies to Jesus’ life-giving truths.”

Thoughts from daily Bible reading for today – January 9, 2024

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.  2 Corinthians 10:5

When I was in my twenties, one of my dearest mentors used to tell me, “Press in, Shana. Press in” to remind me to earnestly seek intimacy with Jesus.

During the most difficult times in our lives, pressing into Jesus isn’t just a choice. It’s a matter of internal life or internal death. It’s a matter of being an overcomer or of being defeated by the enemy of our souls who is bent on his mission to steal, kill, and destroy. (John 10:10)

During this season when I have been fighting cancer (Jesus has really been fighting for me) I’ve been pressing into Him every day. And to do that, I’ve been using what I call Truth Anchors. These Anchors are Scripture . . . something the Lord has told me through His Spirit during my journey or encouraging promises others have given me. In short, my Truth Anchors keep me from drifting into deep waters of deception where the enemy can attack me.

The first time when I was in the hospital for three weeks for cancer treatment, I had to have surgery to remove a cancerous lump from my right breast. The surgical prep involved having an IV inserted into my left arm to administer anesthesia. Surgery was new to me, and I was nervous. So, I decided to anchor myself in truth, while a nurse-in-training, first unsuccessfully, attempted to insert the IV.

Prior to the procedure, I wrote down my Truth Anchors in a small notebook, and asked my husband to stand beside my hospital bed and turn the pages for each truth while I read them out loud and the nurse poked and prodded me.

Tears puddled in my eyes, my husband turned the pages of my little notebook, and I read God’s truths out loud of things He had told me through the Holy Spirit, through Scripture, and through His people.

“Beauty will come from this.”

“I will never leave you, and I will never forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5).

“With long life, I will satisfy you and show you my salvation” (Psalm 91:16).

“On the other side of this is life, more life than you ever dreamed.”

“I will live and not die, and I will declare the works of the Lord” (Psalm 118:17).

While my husband and I used these and other Truth Anchors to hold me steady even while tears flowed, we pushed back the darkness and kept fearful thoughts that wanted to consume me at bay.

In 2 Corinthians 10:5, Paul says to take every thought captive to make it obedient to Christ. That’s what Truth Anchors do. They push out lies, push back the darkness, and help us grab onto Life. They help us to turn our gaze, even in the heat of the battle, away from Satan’s negative, soul-sucking lies to Jesus’ life-giving truths.

Are you going through something difficult today? Has a spirit of fear come on you and you feel out of control? Are you afraid of the future? Do you doubt Jesus is with you? Has anxiety become your companion? I encourage you to grab onto Truth Anchors today and believe them. Don’t just recite them. Accept them as fact. This will push back the darkness and keep you from being consumed by deception.

Turn your eyes upon Jesus, and His truth today. His words will sustain you, protect you, and give you hope. His truth is an anchor that will never disappoint.

“When the enemy comes in like a flood, The Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him” (Isaiah 59:19b, NKJV).

Prayer

Lord, I hold onto your truth as my truth. I praise you that through your truth, I am an overcomer. How faithful you are to hold me steady, even in my most difficult moments. I praise you! Amen.

Application

Get a small notebook and write your Truth Anchors in it as the Lord gives them to you. Then, read them aloud each day and accept them as fact during difficult times.
